Default Endless loop at Microsoft

I upgraded the motherboard and CPU which, of course, required reinstalling XP. So now I have an old version of XP.

I click the little balloon to upgrade to SP2, which tells me I must upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 before I can download the SP2 upgrade. No problem, I download IE7 (even though I'll never use it again), only it won't even install because I'm not running SP2.

So I reboot and click the little balloon to upgrade to SP2. And so on, and so on, and so on.

Any suggestions?

Try going to the windows update website and installing updates manually. You'll have to use IE, but it should work with IE5 and up.
