50 left in a poker stars 180/ Blinds $100- $200 no ante yet and I've got and M-14 $4300 in chips and holding pocket JJs. No read on anyone. Second position who has $2200 raises to 800. I'm right behind him and make it $2200 to isolate, and the button reraises all in for $4500. First raiser calls and I call for my remaining $2000.
Did I make the correct play raising the initial guy when I was also in such early position. At the time I could only see raising or folding but maybe I'm mistaken in that thinking. Flat calling would have left me $3000 if I chose to fold to the reraise from the third player so maybe that wasn't such a bad move. Does anyone here fold the jacks for the $800 raise. Anyone not reraise the initial raiser or not call the reraise from the third guy? Thanks |

I cant think of a time where it is ever correct to put in half of your stack in preflop.
Your options were to push or call; your raise was very bad. |

Thanks for response Cornell; Is the push here correct because of the relatively small size of my stack? Would I do this with JJ with 10,000 chips if there were still 7 players left to act?
Is folding to the first raise not an option in playing this correctly? |

Insta shove.
The only reason I can see making that raise is if you're planning a stop-and-go when you shove any flop. |

bob; Is there any situation where a call or fold is appropriate when I've got $4300. in chips and m=14 or is insta shove the only move you would consider other than stop and go?

I think I would fold before I would call 800, Usually someone w/ 10bbs EP raising 1/3-1/2 their stack wants action(maybe if its a 4/180 hes just clueless, less likely in 10 or 20).
Not to mention you won't really be getting odds to call a shove and be against 2 hands that could easily be both an overpair, and overcards, in which case you are just giving away 800 chips. Like others have said shoving prolly the best option and hope to get HU as a slight fav over EP raisers range. |

duvvard; Yes it was a $4.00 180 and the original raiser had k-10. As you said, he was clueless. Unfortunately the guy behind me had QQ. You said you'd fold before you called $800. Would you ever fold in that situation with $4300. in chips. Explain why a simple call that didn't get reraised would be so bad if it left me with $3600 in chips and a low but still breathing M of 10 when I miss the flop.

Well lets say someone else behind you calls also, and the flop comes A 8 4, or K 10 2 Q44 anything with an overcard. We can assume even the worst of donks are shoving any flop w/ almost half their chips in preflop. Any overcard and you are not only worried about him, but anyone else potentially in the hand.
Especially in a 4/180 there is a fair chance that someone behind you will call/raise and with JJ you really can't be playing multiway pots for that big a % of your stack, particularly from that position. |

So would you consider folding to the raise rather then pushing?

Because of this...
"Not to mention you won't really be getting odds to call a shove and be against 2 hands that could easily be both an overpair, and overcards, in which case you are just giving away 800 chips." and this "Well lets say someone else behind you calls also, and the flop comes A 8 4, or K 10 2 Q44 anything with an overcard. We can assume even the worst of donks are shoving any flop w/ almost half their chips in preflop. Any overcard and you are not only worried about him, but anyone else potentially in the hand." I like this..."Like others have said shoving prolly the best option and hope to get HU as a slight fav over EP raisers range. " folding a little too weak I think, but still a better option than calling IMO. Running into an overpair behind you 10% of the time is just the risk you run. |
