I recommend Weeds and It's Always Sunny in Philidelphia. I'm not sure if they're out on DVD though so you might need to acquire them by different means. They're both great shows though.

BSG, Band of Brothers, Sports Night are all good series that I DVD'd. The Office (UK) was too painful for me to get into it, though I did watch the whole DVD.

If you've never seen the Sopranos, this is a must, especially seasons 1 and 2. I recently got into Battlestar Galactica and it's really effing good, even if you aren't really into sci-fi. Entourage is great, but watch them in order. You've probably seen an isolated episode or two and weren't that impressed. Some people don't like it because there's not much character development, but I think this is fine for a light comedy that's basically a fantasy vehicle for viewers. Season 1 of Weeds is the best-written comedy and funniest thing I've seen in years. Season 2 gets more serious and tries to be like the Sopranos or something, but it just doesn't work that well.

I don't know why Entourage is recommended so consistently in these threads. Not only is it not even close to being on par with the other shows being mentioned, but it's available on OD/HBO-C all the time. But I must reiterate that it is really pretty bad, and basically only watchable in the same way that Laguna Beach is watchable.

The Sopranos or Battlestar Galactica have my vote. I'm Surprised how many people are recomending Battlestar Galactica. It tells you something to have such a little known show get so many recomendations.

Since Sopranos is the more obvious choice, I'll second the vote for Homicide.
