Re: So Major League Baseball Players Are The Best Athletes?
i would bet it would be easier for an average golfer to do well in these sports than an average player in any sport to do well in golf.

2. Most people here think mere blazing speed can overcome average athleticism if you want to play in the NFL. Clearly not enough for baseball. [/ QUOTE ] These people are wrong. Don't mistake vocal for a majority. |

Myth: pitching is more important than hitting
Team strength should be built in precedence of hitting, fielding, then pitching because run scoring and good defense create a psychological edge that improves pitching. A pitcher has no effect on his team's ability to field the ball or score runs.

I hope someday we get to be general managers against one another. -Michael |

Re: So Major League Baseball Players Are The Best Athletes?
If I invented a "sport" where it was basically a modified golf game, and the goal of the game is hole-in-one's, the hardest thing to do in sports would now be to hit a hole-in-one. So are golfers now the best "athletes"?
Kind of a silly argument. The best athlete should be the one who has the most athleticism. Then the answer is probably heavyweight fighters in Pride. Fedor has a better chance of hitting a fastball than any MLB'er has of beating him in a cage, ya dig? |

Also, point 3 is painfully inaccurate, and point 2 is also not true.

Re: So Major League Baseball Players Are The Best Athletes?
An NBA team probably couldn't beat an average high school chess team or horse shoe throwing team or pogo stick jumping team, but they could beat the average high school football team. Therefore pogo stickers are the best athletes? Wow Sklananasky your logic is laughable. Athleticism is the antithesis of specific athletic skill sets. Baseball players require a very specific skill set, which doesn't inform one way or the other about their athleticism. Football and to a lesser extent basketball require more general skill sets that everyone involved with sports will develop.
point 2: Blazing speed IS athleticism. Speed is probably the single most significant component of athleticism. point 3: Fair enough, a 9 foot tall schlub isn't athletic. To succeed in the NBA, height can substitute for athleticism. I don't know if your horrible logic is just meant to promote discussion and you're leveling us or what. |

[ QUOTE ] "The two teams could trade pitchers and Ohio State would still not have a chance against the Yankees." Huh? If the two teams trade pitchers, Ohio State is just hitting against a college pitching squad. The Yankees have to hit against professional pitchers who will sometimes pitch great games. If they switch staffs Ohio State couldn't be any worse than even money, basically you have a totally even game with the exception being the Yankees' defense which may or may not be much of an advantage, I'm not sure. -Michael [/ QUOTE ] [/ QUOTE ] If the two teams switched pitchers, the OSU hitters are hitting against a college pitching squad . . . backed up by the Yankee defense, while the Yankee batterss are up against a poor major league pitching squad . . . backed up by a college defense. OSU has no chance. |

Most college-level baseball players play defense pretty well. I think the Yankees would be no more than a 60% favorite, particularly since college hitting is typically better than college pitching. |
