If you're going with your dad and looking for cheap tables, then I don't know how you can miss with Flamingo. Your dad will have $5 or $10 out the wazzoo with Flamingo, Imperial Palace, and Barbary Coast right there, and the low limit poker abounds as well at Flamingo. Plus your location is prime for checking out a lot of other casinos.

Eat at Batista's Hole in the Wall, check out the pool (nicest among the non premium hotels), and clean up at the very soft touristy poker room.

"The charts at www.allvegaspoker.com has the min and max buy ins for all casinos."

But they are NEVER up to date and I mean NEVER.

Heck, they don't even list all of the Vegas poker rooms but whatever.

The limits and spread charts were completely revamped and updated not more then 12 days ago.

Also, what poker rooms are you referring to as missing? Nevada Palace? Jokers Wild? Honestly, with the exception of a couple few locals only dive joints, every single poker room in Vegas is on there. Not sure what you meant by that.

Yea, but I just looked and they are STILL dead wrong. Some of the info over there is pretty sad (ie. flat out wrong) and I don't see how you can screw up listing min-maxes at the Mirage and Sun Coast for example. I can live with not knowing all the Vegas poker rooms but when you guys keep getting limits wrong that have been in place for as long as they have, I just wonder when the last time you AVP guys have actually played in some of these card rooms?

FWIW, LVM is one of my favorite (2+2) posters but I just wish that AVP did a little better homework in the information they put out. JMHO.

Happy Pokering,

Howard

AVP is run by two people, plus myself, and I only run the forums.

It depends on people like you (the players) to notify them of changes to keep it up to date. Being only three people, we cannot be expected to play in every single room in Vegas regularly. Like everyone else, we find the places we like and tend to stay there, thus depending on the players/poker room operators to inform us of updates.

If you have specific info to update, please notify AVP at info@allvegaspoker.com

You are one of my faves too, Howard. Nothing personal here, just business.

Hi Howard, thanks for pointing out that Mirage and Suncoast had minor errors under the min/max buy-ins column. I believe the errors have been fixed. Happy Holidays!

Sigh....very few actual answers to OP's questions.

Ok, let me address the situation:

1.) Your dad likes BJ and doesn't play much else.

It depends if he counts and what limits he wants to play. If he counts AND needs $5 tables, the only real game in town is Plaza and LVC downtown. $5 DD tables and they give about 70% penetration. If he does not count, there is cheap BJ at Casino Royale, Barbary Coast, and maybe a few other places.

2.) Summer is Vegas slower season.

Rooms are cheaper than the rest of the year(cept December). Somebody mentioned that downtown is slow in the summer during the week. They are right. If your trip is weekdays, then stay on the strip. If your trip is weekends, then downtown is the way to go. If you need a pool, Plaza has a crappy pool and Golden Nugget should have a nice pool. BTW, there is limit HE at GN, Binions, and Plaza. Golden Nugget is the nicest place downtown, is currently undergoing renovations, and should be under $100 a night on weekends in August...probably around $75 or so a night. BUT....if you are going on weekdays, limits on the strip are lower for BJ than they are on weekends, there are more poker games easily accessible than downtown, and room rates are pretty darn cheap. Like others said, check out IP(dump), Flamingo, Barbary Coast(no pool) even Treasure Island sometimes has low room rates and is a really nice place. All are within easy walking distance of lots of poker. If you would rather stay in the MGM/NYNY/Ex/Trop area, look at Hooters, Tropicana, Excalibur, and sometimes even Luxor.

3.) Resources to check for room rates:

Kayak.com
travelaxe.com
expedia.com
travelocity.com
cheapovegas.com
i4vegas.com
vegas.com
hotels web sites.

For your first time in Vegas I'd recommend staying on the strip. If your trip is long enough to schedule a day downtown, be sure to go downtown to see "old school" Vegas and the Freemont Street Experience at night. I like the feeling I get when I walk into Binions and how old and nostalgic the place is unlike everything on the strip. Your dad will be able to find plenty of $5 BJ downtown and you can play $2/$4 at the plaza, binions, golden nugget, etc.

Bring shorts and light shirts - Vegas is damn hot in August.

Thanks for all of the good information! Also, my dad does count, and he will definetely be playing higher than $5 tables.

The problem of course is....and I'm assuming he can't count a six deck shoe....that there is no decent DD game on the strip until you get in the $100 minimum bet range(with one excception). Places like BC only deal 50% of the deck so counting has marginal impact.

Harrahs casinos suck fat ones and pay only 6:5 on BJ rather than 3:2 so everyone recommending Harrahs casinos are big fat morons. This includes IP, Flamingo, Harrahs, Cesars, Ballys, and Paris.

The one exception...the place on the strip that deals a good DD BJ with full pay...is Slots O Fun next to Circus Circus. But there is a HUGE caveat. As soon as they spot you counting, they bring in a new dealer who deals maybe 33% of each deck before shuffle. This has happened to me twice. Both within 10 minutes of sitting down, betting $5-50. I've never had such problems at LVC or Plaza.

One important detail was left out - The last week of August is the second busiest time of the year in Vegas, 96,000 attendees at the MAGIC fashion tradeshow every year. Getting an affordable yet good room during this week is not easy.
