I don't understand the harsh responses in this thread, however, I am under the belief that guns are not evil (only some of the people that use them in the wrong way are). If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns, right? And a criminals biggest fear is that his/her next victim will be armed. Those are the beliefs I go by, right or wrong.

However, in your case, we would need more info to determine what type of gun is in your best interest.

Is it self-defense, hunting, just having fun? etc....

As far as pistols go, I would recommend something with a clip (such as a 9mm) over a revolver, but that is just my personal preference.

Another option:

Glock Model 22, it's Glock's full size .40 caliber. Get an after market 9mm barrel and G17 magazine from a place like http://lonewolfdist.com/default.asp . This is for learning to shoot using low recoil and easy to find cheap 9mm ammo. The barrel drops in with no gunsmithing. Once you've mastered shooting it in 9mm, drop the .40 caliber barrel in and go to work mastering that. You can also get a .357 Sig barrel for the M22 that will drop in. So you have 3 caliber options with one gun. 357 Sig is not very common so it's not cheap, but it's nice to have all these options in one gun.

Overall, the OP's original idea is the best, something like a Smith and Wesson .22 revolver as a first gun. The biggest mistake you can make with a first gun is buying something powerful, with stout recoil, making it impossible to learn correct technique. Same thing with archery, get a very light draw weight bow for your first, or else you end up with tons of hard to break bad habits.

Jesus Christ calm down sorry. Last time I checked guns were legal in The United States. Are you guys so sensitive that a simple conversation about guns kills you this much. Sorry but I think it is ridiculous to get attacked for talking about a perfectly legal subject.

BrandonT858,

Check out the forums The High Road or The Firing Line. Lots of very knowledgeable people will bend over backwards to help educate you.

Here is some quick and dirty info:

Decide the caliber you want. And more importantly decide what you want to use it for. 9mm ammo is cheaper and military surplus is available. Tons of options in that caliber. If you go big you want then a 1911 .45 ACP would be a good choice. You can get them in 9mm and .40 cal as well. Rock Island is dirty cheap but good. Springfield is better and the best bang for the 1911 buck. Kimber is the best for 1911's. Something like this:

I don't know anything about revolvers though. I'm a shotgun/rifle man.
