I haven't read all replies, but it didn't look like anyone really got into defense.

Given his height, I'm sure he'll be able to get his fair share of points just dropping the ball through the hoop. His lack of speed or coordination shouldn't hurt him too much. He'll be able to create enough shots just posting up and falling backwards on the poor bastard trying to defend him.

But on defense, this guy is going to get owned. Even being of average athleticism, he's got no chance against NBA players.

I think he'd prove to be too much of a liability on the defensive end to start for very long.

Well the more I thought about it, the trickiest part is that the OP is ambiguous. However, it is stated that at the height of his jump and extension, it wouldn't overcome the defenders reach to his inferior athleticism.

People keep bringing up real life players to refute the point that an 8'2 guy would dominate. This makes NO SENSE. The guy David describes in the OP is 8'2" tall and well over 400 lbs, he's also of normal proportions with no significant physical/health problems and has the agility/speed/endurance of an average 6' tall man.

The NBA, or any other league, has NEVER seen a specimen like this. No one even remotely close to this has ever played pro ball, and probably never will. To say, "look at George Muresan/Manute Bol/Mark Eaton, etc" is completely irrelevant. The guy David is describing has NEARLY A FOOT and hundreds of pounds on any of them, plus he's more durable, proportional, and coordinated.

This guy is taller than any man on the planet currently, he is NOTHING like anyone in the league...ever. To compare him to guys who all started in the NBA at one point, and were significantly inferior to the guy this thread is meant to discuss in many ways does nothing to help the argument that he wouldn't excell.

If he can't shoot free throws this all goes up in smoke. Can you say "hack-a-schlub"?

World's tallest man wastes his time saving dolphins, instead of practicing for NBA.

World's tallest man saves China dolphins Thu Dec 14, 7:28 AM ET

BEIJING - The long arms of the world's tallest man reached in and saved two dolphins by pulling out plastic from their stomachs, state media and an aquarium official said Thursday.

The dolphins got sick after nibbling on plastic from the edge of their pool at an aquarium in Liaoning province. Attempts to use surgical instruments to remove the plastic failed because the dolphins' stomachs contracted in response to the instruments, the China Daily newspaper reported.

Veterinarians then decided to ask for help from Bao Xishun, a 7-foot-9 herdsman from Inner Mongolia with 41.7-inch arms, state media said.

Bao, 54, was confirmed last year by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's tallest living man.

Chen Lujun, the manager of the Royal Jidi Ocean World aquarium, told The Associated Press that the shape of the dolphins' stomachs made it difficult to push an instrument very far in without hurting the animals. People with shorter arms could not reach the plastic, he said.

"When we failed to get the objects out we sought the help of Bao Xishun from Inner Mongolia and he did it successfully yesterday," Chen said. "The two dolphins are in very good condition now."

Photographs showed the jaws of one of the dolphins being held back by towels so Bao could reach inside the animal without being bitten.

"Some very small plastic pieces are still left in the dolphins' stomachs," Zhu Xiaoling, a local doctor, told Xinhua. "However the dolphins will be able to digest these and are expected to recover soon."

I thought Clifford Ray had cornered the market in pulling detritus from dolphins. From wikipedia:

n 1978, Ray was in the news for an entirely different reason: he helped to save a dolphin's life. During maintenance in his tank, a bottlenose dolphin named "Mr. Spock", housed at Marine World in Redwood City, California had swallowed a sharp screw. The veterinarian was unwilling to perform a risky operation while the screw was still in the dolphin's first stomach, just inches from his fingertips. His frustrated suggestion that he needed longer arms led someone to ask local star Ray (whose arms are 3 feet 9 inches, or 114 centimeters long) if he could help. With gloves, lubrication, and guidance, he was able to reach down Spock's throat and retrieve the screw before it could cause more damage.[1]

I was almost scared to read the rest of the sentence.

Also, I owe my buddy an apology: I guess it is true that the Chinese stole everything they know from the U.S. I thought he was just being xenophobic.
