[ QUOTE ] The Jays offered 126 million for 7 years to Vernon Wells, this is a sexy deal for him imo. [/ QUOTE ] With the deals that Center Fielders got this offseason, I can't imagine Wells getting less than 8/160 if he was on the market right now. [/ QUOTE ] GM: Jays won't re-sign Wells for Beltran-type money How quickly the market changes... |

Doesn't Seattle already have a decent young 2B?
I looooove Chris Snelling. Please just let him be healthy for one damn season. [censored] can hit 280/380/480 in his sleep. Well, ignoring his problems last year which seem like a fluke. Ok, I'm a fanboy, whatever. Fruto should be a solid RP. [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] bowdenbowdenbowden |

OK sam, I just looked over both those guys' numbers for 2006. Jennings was FAR better than Suppan in 2006, and Trachsel was downright AWFUL. Liriano and Clemens created more season value in 16 and 19 starts, respectively, than did Trachsel in 30. Keep these bums out of the same sentence as Jennings, please! [/ QUOTE ] The problem I have is ignoring 2002-2006. Jennings is just not much better than Suppan and Trachsel. |

Matsuzaka signs for 6/52. (Sports Illustrated) Great signing for the Sox, locking up one of the world's best pitchers for less than a 10 million cap hit. [/ QUOTE ] There's no salary cap in baseball. And how many millions did they pay just for the right to negotiate with this guy? |

Re: ~~~Unofficial Baseball Offseason Thread~~~
I think a piece of the Astros trade was that they already wanted to go in another direction in center than Taveras. Or at least they didn't want Taveras-Everett-Ausmus and he was the one they could include in a deal. To the straight stat guys, I will tell you that Hirsch is not nearly as good as his AAA stats will lead you to believe. He has a very flat fastball and no earth shattering out pitch. Personally, I like Jennings better than Garland, so I am not too opposed to this trade.

[ QUOTE ] Nonesense. His BABIP last year was .293. While that was down a bit from his prior years (where he was right around just over .300 range) [/ QUOTE ] .293 is abnormally low in Coors, and his previous career low was .307. [/ QUOTE ] Do you understand that BABIP is not completely out of a pitcher's control? link High flyball pitchers tend to have slightly lower BABIPs. High groundball pitchers tend to have slightly higher BABIPS? Jennings saw a reduction in his groundballs and a significant increase in his flyballs in 2006, thus we should have expected his BABIP to come down some. Anyway, a drop from .307-.330 BABIP to a .293 BABIP is not super extreme and is consistent with his increased FB and decreased GB numbers. It doesn't scream I got lucky. For an example of an I got lucky guy, check out the numbers from Orioles closer Chris Ray in 2006: link |

There's nothing to stop a team from spending as much as they want. And no, my question wasn't rhetorical. I don't know exactly how much they paid, but it was in the tens of millions I believe. |
