And Fight Club was a great book. Chuck Pahlunik (sp?) is a very talented and unconventional writer.

[/ QUOTE ]

While I like Fight Club well enough, after reading all of Chuck's stuff I realized how very conventional he is, just his own conventions. Each book seems to be an echo of the previous ones, and his style has become really predictable. I don't mean to harp on the guy, but he kinda had one or two really good ideas and made them into like 6 novels.

I think a lot of people are confusing this thread with "Literary classics that I don't like"

[/ QUOTE ]

Do you have other methods for determining what sucks? Any book successful enough to belong in this thread is presumably at least somewhat esteemed.

I promote David Foster Wallace's "Infinite Jest" as my own candidate for overrated.

[/ QUOTE ]

I disagree... I guess I don't see it as an 'intellectual' book - I just thought it was a joy to read, but I know plenty of people who can't stand the way he writes... I can't fault you - with the wild tangents in the footnotes - he really should use hypertext.

..I mentioned Pynchon's Crying of Lot 49 because I read it after reading DFW... people were saying it was in the same postmodern vein, but I found the writing style to be kludgy (for postmodern)... where it seemed propped up by the pseudointelligent stuff he wrote in there - which I found annoying.

after reading half of an ayn rand book and seeing people i strongly dislike reading them it is pretty easy to just say that people who read ayn rand books can suck it. she is just a bad writer, i think her books are EXACTLY what this thread is about. she is trying so hard to write an intellectual book for pseudo intellectuals that she just writes a terrible piece of crap. bummer.

I think the whole point is to mock pretension, but I've talked to a number of people who find the Pynchons and DFWs and Eggerses absolutely unbearable.

[/ QUOTE ]

i agree, espically with eggers, his books always make me think from reading about them...this will be the one i like...then i read half of it and hate it...not because he sucks tho

quote:I am going to get destroyed for this but,
catch-22?
I found it intolerable to read.

i absoluetly hated this book but i finished it cause so many people like it...i think it was the worst book i have ever read

i loved gatsby....but it is pale in comparision to beautiful and the damned, which is a very balla book about living do do very little but be lazy.

i also thought catcher in the rye was way overratted

the best writen book i think i have read is potriat of dorian gray,
