I'm in the same boat as most people here, and can't agree more with what Dan had to say about living a healthy life. Right now I'm taking a semester off from school(didn't really want to though) and instead of playing 25+ hrs/wk like I thought I could do with no problem, I'm struggling to play 15. I think a large part of the lack of motivation has to do with the fact that I'm not really active in pursuing many other things. I got into investing and some real estate stuff, but I'm doing that stuff at home also so it doesn't help that much. Right now I'm in the mindset that someone above described "oh this is the best time to be making $200/hr I have to make the most of my time". This mindset I think is really really bad both for short term and long term since it will make you go batshit crazy.

I'm seriously considering just taking the rest of the year off from poker and starting fresh in 07 with a clear mind. With no poker, it's gonna force me to start doing more stuff and then poker will become fresh and hopefully at least bearable . I just feel like the mindset that I have to make 100k/yr or whatever just puts way too much pressure on me, especially since we're so young. It's pretty incredible that even with all this extra money we have that puts us a few years ahead of our peers in that category that we still kill ourselves trying to make more and more. I started going to a boxing/martial arts gym recently and if I wasn't so damn out of shape/lazy from smoking pot and playing poker/videogames I'd go everyday because I'm almost positive that that kind of excercise will bust me out of my poker funk. If anyone can think of a good get out of the house/non-poker activity prop bet, I would for sure want to partake to get me outta this rut.

ski to maintain your mind for multitabling, you gotta diversify your life a bit and be active and healthy. You'll be sharper and better too.

[/ QUOTE ]

Can you expand upon this some? Maybe give us a standard "poker" day schedule for you, including exercise/what you eat, etc.

Geezus Dude, if it's really true that you are making "a couple hundred an hour", then at 25 hours per week, you are a making $5000 a week, $20K per month, $240K per year.

STFU and stop whining about "only" being able to play 25 hours per week.

Honestly, the BS on this site floors me.

Wow. Such helpful advice on a website full of professional pokers. We're all rich and you're poor, get over it and stop clogging poker forums with BS like that.

Ski,

I visited the psychology forum for the first time in months to post almost exactly the same thing you posted.

I have played more poker then I have ever played before this month. I’ve played 150 hours (90k hands). I’d be up around 40k beside an ill-fated shot at 50/100 (-30k). The additional play had significantly hurt my win rate along with stressing me out. Poker is a job that requires constant intense contraction and thinking, more so then other job imo. Just because of this it’s going to be hard to put in the standard 8 hours a day that most people do at their jobs.

I don’t really ever have a problem tilting, just sometimes I have trouble concentrating. I find myself going on autopilot, not thinking through hands fully, doing dumb things.

Cutting down on the number of tables/cutting down session times etc helps, buy I want to be able to make more money damnit.

I try to live a healthy lifestyle. I work out 4-5 times a week, go tanning twice a month and eat very clean healthy. I think this helps to some extent.

Right now I have a really irregular sleep schedule and I think this might hurt the hours I can play. I basically sleep whenever I’m tired and don’t live on a 24hour schedule. Do you guys think this hurts me?

I also have developed a caffeine addiction I think and tried adderal for the first time. Adderal is amazing but I don’t want to to use it regularly as I could see easily becoming addicting.

I just ordered Zen and the art of archery as this thread reminded me that Howard Ledrer highly recommended this book.

I’d really look forward to hearing additional ideas.

Ski, I had the same problem. One of the ways I was able to break out of it was to treat my time on the tables as if I was going to work. What I mean is most of the people working the 8-5 jobs don't want to be there the full 9 hours but they're forced to because of that threat of being fired. Our situation is a little different since we don't have anyone to answer to so we have to boss ourselves.

I started by scheduling my sessions and forcing myself to play a set number of hours at certain times of the day. It seems constricting at first but if you take the attitude that x time is poker time it starts to develop into a habit. Pretty soon I was finding myself scheduling an hour beforehand to study and work on my game and an hour, maybe longer to review my sessions when I'm done.

I'm nowhere near the level you're at but I'm able to get 30+ hours of actual playing time in just by sticking to my 1 hour study, 2.5 hour session, 1 hour break, 2.5 hour session, 1 hour review schedule. I'm running good so next month I'm hoping to be able to substitute out some of the study and review time for more time on the tables. I also have an extra day as a "backup" day in case I have to cut it short one day due to bad beats or whatever. Keeps me from getting tilty and if i don't use it I get to watch football or whatever.

I dunno, maybe it sounds goofy and it probably is but I was never really the type of person that enjoyed getting boxed into having to "work" a certain timeframe so I had a lot of the same problems. Setting myself on a schedule and knowing that these hours are devoted to playing poker really helps a lot. It's even carried over into other things. For instance, I'll keep a notepad next to the desk so I can write things down to do later as I think of them. That way I don't get distracted and they don't interrupt my session time. The phone is usually shut off and I go offline the things like Skype so I'm not interrupted. Now it doesn't even seem like a schedule to me. Before I know it I've got 5 hours in at the tables and still have a good chunk of the day left. As scary as it sounds I may even come back in later and play another short session just so I've got a jump on the next day and I know I can make my goal even if I take some time off later in the week.

I'm rambling. Hope that makes sense.

I think this is okay. Games are juicier at nighttime, its basically required to stay up late if you want to excel at poker IMO.

Be a man. Do what you feel like. If you cant put more hours, then dont. Isnt the whole point of playing anyway is to a) enjoy yourself, b) make enough $ and c) use your extra time to do things you WANT to do?

30 hours is pretty much my weekly max for online play (If I'm sticking to ring games. For some reason if I'm on a tourney kick I can play more). However, in addition to this, I can play virtually unlimited live without getting burned out.

I know your $/hr isn't as high live, but it might be one way to keep your weekly hours high without getting burned out. With all the good casinos in the lower mainland, it's worth a try.

I think my brain separates online play into the "work" file, and live play into the "recreation" file. I hate work, but I can play forever.

I'm rambling, hope this helps...
