Another bit of evidence that Sabean is one of the worst GM's in baseball.

Disagree. I think Sabean is awful, but they'll make the money back in 756 shirts, tickets and advertising revenue which should skyrocket as the world will watch them all year. I think this signing was fine.

boris,

i think its obvious the giants will be terrible this year and for many years to come. However, i do think it was essential to have him break the record with the giants. Also, he will generate a ton of revenue this year for us to sign some big name free agent next year and start rebuilding. i dont hate the move.

I just want to mention that Bonds' defense isn't really that bad. He is definitely below average but he's not Manny-esque as many people are making it to believe. Since he's played so long, and been very good at it, he's very good at positioning himself before the ball is hit. He's very slow now, but he makes up for that somewhat with his great knowledge of the game and anticipation of the play.

10M would have been percieved as an insult and I have to think the Cards would have paid that much

Somebody had to want Bonds. Otherwise, the Giants could have paid him $16/yr instead of 16M/yr.

It's really the best case scenario. I set O/U for games played at 100.

Assuming that no one signs during the season, what free agents will be available for the Giants to sign using the "Bonds money"?

[/ QUOTE ] Not necessarily. The Giants could be judging, not implausibly, that a happy Bonds is a more productive Bonds, and the loyalty that they are displaying will attract free agents to sign with them.
