Probably need 2 guys to platoon in RF, though. [/ QUOTE ] A Madson for Ryan Church trade has been rumored. |

Yea, I'd take that. Phils have also been mentioned with Huff and Mench.

I'm fine with Victorino too. If only Burrell could get his head on straight.

Yea, I'd take that. Phils have also been mentioned with Huff and Mench. [/ QUOTE ] Huff is going to go for a lot (and Mench might too, with the scarcity of rh bats among free agents) but he would be a great fit for the Phillies, even with Victorino succeeding and playing. If they can trade Burrell, he can play OF. If not, he can platoon with lefty masher Helms at 3b, possibly playing OF against lefties. |

Ryan Church is a better hitter than Aubrey Huff.

[/ QUOTE ] Keeping Rowand at this point would be simply stupid, as would trading Burrell and eating part of his salary in this market. I would hope to see Burrell in LF, Victorino in CF, and some combination of Church/Huff/Mench in RF. Victorino is a good enough CF, but he would be below average in RF. |

I would like to see that as well.
Burrell isn't great and he makes way too much money, but you can do a lot worse than him. I'd much rather see Burrell out there than Jeff Conine. |

Considering Burrell only has 2 years left, I'm not convinced based on this market that he is that heavily overpaid.

I don't know that this deal is as bad as it appears for Sox fans. The Sox freed up what, $10 mil in this deal? The Sox also opened a place in the rotation for B. McCarthy who should provide slightly less production than Garcia, but at a fraction of the price. That gives Kenny Williams more flexibility in further deals (Crede could go, another pitcher might be traded). Gonzalez has decent strikeout rates, if he improves his control a little he could really be useful and without an improvement he'll can still be at least marginally productive because of he's a lefty. Floyd seems far more suspect, but the Sox haven't anything/$ in this deal.
I'd be more concerned if I was a Phillies fan. Garcia is not the pitcher people think. While his BB/9 has improved, his K/9 has dropped for 3 straight years. Everyone is comparing him to Meche and Lilly. Is this a reason to be excited about the deal? Meche is younger, strikes out more guys with less control, and will not win double digit games in the next five years for a few million more per year. Meche is scary. Are Phillies fans excited to have Garcia or excited to not have Meche? I think the Lilly signing might be understandable considering the recent state of Cubs starting pitchers' health. Kerry Wood has started 36 games in the last 3 years combined. It has only taken Prior 2 seasons to start 36 games. Lilly started 32 last year. The Cubs seem to be paying for health as a skill. |
