Default Re: [Golf] What % of players can break 80 on a real course?

I looked through the handicap section at www.usga.org but didn't come up with a percentage. We have several meetings this winter and I'll try to remember to ask.

I'll bet the number is higher than most people think.

web page

According to this site only 22% can break 90. I have seen other sites claim only 5% of golfers can regularly break 100, so it probably depends on who you consider a golfer, and what you consider regularly breaking the number.

Your original question was pretty vague, do you mean players who have ever broken 80, or players who could do it once a year, or once every 5 rounds, or more than half the time?

I golfed for my high school team the last three years... but never took it that seriously. I played every day for 2 1/2 my sophomore year but only played once or twice before i made the team... and by the end of the first year i was shooting high 80's... didnt touch a club until tryouts the next year 2 1/2 months later i was shooting high 70's... didnt touch a club until tryouts the next year and shooting anywhere from 1 to 5 strokes over par every match. I never shot par. By my senior year i was the best player on my team... but their were 15 or so guys in my league that shot better than me... and about 60% of the league shot under 80 consistantly. I think your guesses are way to low... and i would say 30% of serious golfers have shot an 80 before.

I guarantee 30% of serious golfers haven't shot a "by the rules" 79 on a reasonable course. The number of people who cheat at golf is staggering, whether knowingly or unknowingly.

Personally, I break 80 on an awful day... then again, it's my profession.

Of my students, I'd say ~8% can do it on a very good day.
