Don\'s Law (nc)
Don’s Law-
I am sure that most of you are familiar with Murphy’s Law which states “anything that can go wrong, will go wrong” but I find that Murphy’s Law is a bit too absolute to readily be applied to poker. Things in poker do not always go wrong. Don’s Law helps to define when things in poker will go wrong- For cash games- 1) The larger the pot, the more likely it is that your opponent will suck-out For tournaments- 1) The deeper you get into a tournament, the less likely you are to win a coin flip or for your hand to hold-up as a big favorite 2) The higher the relative buy-in for the event you are playing, the less likely you are to win a coin flip or for your hand to hold-up as a big favorite Of course there are poker truisms which are generally accepted- The longer it is that you wait for a playable hand, the more likely it becomes that you will run into a better hand the next time you play a hand. Losing chips to good players happens gradually, while losing chips to bad players happens in large chunks. When you ‘just know’ you are going to lose, you usually do. What other laws or generally accepted poker truisms should we note? |

I think Rounders said it best:
"Few players can remember their big wins but they can all recall with amazing accuracy the outstanding beats they've taken." (might not be a perfect quote) |

I think Rounders said it best: "Few players can remember their big wins but they can all recall with amazing accuracy the outstanding beats they've taken." (might not be a perfect quote) [/ QUOTE ] There is a lot of truth to this, obviously, and I think it can actually become very destructive to one's game. In poker, every time we get it in ahead we feel we've "won" and now deserve to be rewarded. It's all we control, we've done everything right, and Fortune now owes us for our efforts. Unfortunately, the "thrill" of getting it in as a 2:1 or whatever is met an excutiatingly often amount of time with the agony of defeat. It's a cruel, cruel game we subject ourselves to. Imagine if in football, every time a team scores a touchdown they roll a die, and if it's a 1-4 they get to keep the 6 points but if it's a 5 or 6 the other team gets the 6 points. Outlandish! Can you imagine scoring the go-ahead touchdown and losing the roll of the die? |

After a win, your next few 80/20s are really 20/80s.
