Help me out w/ the movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

I just saw this movie last night, and I'm pretty sure I don't get it. Depp and Benicio played really cool characters and I thought the movie was pretty entertaining (definitely some hilarious parts); but, I don't see the overarching point of the movie. This prevents me from really liking it. So, can someone help me out with this? What's the purpose of this movie? Also, one of my buddies says the book is amazing; do people agree with this before I bother reading it?

I've read the book numerous times and really like it. I haven't seen the movie, so can't really comment on how they compare.

I think the 'point' of the book was to be outrageous. It's written as if Thompson actually did all the things in the book, but he can't say that he did because he'll be thrown in jail then. So it's published as a work of fiction.

The story is funny - IMO - and I really like the way Thompson writes.

listen to Hunter S. Thompsons DVD commentary. He just rips into the movie the whole time, pretty funny. He made it no secret that he thought Terry Gilliam made a piece of crap movie out of his great book.

Also, it is a non-fiction book, in a genre usually referred to as Gonzo Journalism.

This may help a bit... both characters are actually the split personalities of Hunter S Thompson. Its pretty obvious when you read the book, he intentionally drops clues all over the place such as using the wrong pronoun and placing it in italics.

I started to read it a few days ago. About time I got around to it, I've been a Hunter fan for ages but never read much of his work. I guess I've always been a fan of what he stands for.
