Default board plays on river, player flashes to dealer then mucks

limit game local casino, river board is 98765 no flush, a player bets and two players call. the better shows QJ and dealer announces "plays the board" second player is a guy who appears very tired and not in tune with the game and is going through his stack quickly, he flashes his cards to dealer (I think it was A7 but didn't see it clearly) and then throws his cards face down toward the muck, dealer mucks the cards, third player shows 65 and dealer says "plays the board" and splits the pot 2 ways. The tired guy is oblivious to what just happened and is waiting for his next two cards.

Is the dealer correct here?

After the split, should the dealer advise the player to expose his hand next time?

Do you, as a player, advise this player to expose his hand next time?

Is the dealer correct here?

Absolutely. Flashing your cards to the dealer is not the same as tabling. He was probably friendly with the dealer, and wanted to show him his "beat". Dealer did his job correctly by not saying anything.

After the split, should the dealer advise the player to expose his hand next time?

Absolutely not. This is not craps where the dealers can advise you on proper game play. Advise given by the dealer would interfere with the game.

Maybe, maybe not. It depends. In this case, no. It is probably that the guy is just tired and misread the board. Probably doesn't do that very often. Whereas if it was some complete newbie next to me, then yes, I will advise them, so they feel more comfortable and understand the game better (may not know what "plays the board" means, or not know that there are no kickers when it comes to full houses). Tourists that are comfortable tend to gamble more, so advising on how to read a board would not be out of line, in certain instances (not certainly not all).

The dealer is horribly wrong here, but it didn't hurt anything. "Plays the board" is not a hand. A "straight" is a hand.

Agreed. Dealer should say "9-high straight" or some such. Saying "plays the board" is almost as bad as telling the mucker to table his hand, which is downright awful.

Showing to dealer and mucking is not equal to tabling or felting the hand. His hand is mucked, it's not the dealer's responsibility, and it is this player's problem that he is tired or can't read the board.

What Randy said. Dealer should never say "plays the board".

I've been in 5-way splits in exactly that situation where the dealer and the experienced players handled it perfectly. First guy tables his cards and says "straight". Dealer nods and says "straight to the 9" or some such. Next guy mucks. Next guys mucks. I turn over my two silently. Next guy tables his. DING! 3-way chop instead of 5. The dealer piping off with "he's playing the board" would have screwed this up entirely.

Either table your hand, or accept the consequences when you muck 'em. You're mucking 'em to try to keep information outta the hands of your opponents, so don't expect your opponents to be too sympathetic when you miss things.

And no, the dealer should NEVER help a player at the table with anything except rules and procedures. I was playing at Wynn a couple months ago when the dealer started giving playing hints to a cute chick. My comment was something like "Wow...you get free poker lessons while you play at the Wynn" and the dealer immediately got my message and shut up. He just slipped, not a big deal.

If the players want to talk strategy and help each other between hands, that's acceptable. If a player wants to go corner a dealer on break and ask for hints, that's fine. But whilst the dealer is in the box he needs to tread a little carefully.

I saw a similar hand over T-day with three players at the showdown, but the dealer did the correct thing. First player tables and says two pair with Ace kicker, which is the board. Second guy mucks, third guy tables and says "same hand - split pot." Second guy either didn't notice or acted like he didn't care when the dealer started chopping the pot TWO WAYS.

A couple of the players looked at each-other and nodded/winked, but no one said anything to the guy who mucked.
