That does have a nasty look to it.

i like Qb5. it allows Ne2! later (and forces the king into a corner afterwords), and protects the b pawn as well as e8. Bxe7 is easily countered with Ra6.

Nice contribution, Qb5 might be a good move. I think this will be the critical position for us, if we choose wrong here its game over. Rd6 is another crazy move... I'll keep suggesting crazy moves and you guys keep looking for good ones!

Note that for any move we consider here, we can interpose 30...hxg3 31.hxg3 if we desire. In some cases it might be preferable to exchange first, and in some cases not.
I was looking at 30...Qd5 31.Qxd5 Nxd5 32.Bxa7 Ra6 33.Re5 Rxa7 34.Rxd5 Rxa2 35.Rb5 h3 (good thing we didn't exchange) and now 36.Kf1 Ra1+ and we go after his h2 pawn. It probably leads to a draw though as you'd expect from a rook ending. |

30...Qd5 31.Qxd5 Nxd5 32.Bd4 looks drawn, but perhaps we have the worse of it, with the inferior minor piece in an open position.
30... Nd5 is sensible, and 30...Rc6 is interesting as well, covering the b-pawn as well as the Knight on c3, while improving the position of the rook (there is no real need to attack f2 anymore). It's also less exposed to attacks by the white bishop. |

Is 30. . . Nxa2 that awful?

Is 30. . . Nxa2 that awful? [/ QUOTE ] Our position looks pretty shaky after 31.Qxb7. We have several threats to deal with. Bd2, Qxb7, and if the bishop is unpinned by a move like 30...Qb5 he has 31.Bd4. 30...Nd5 31.Bd2 Qf5 32.Re8+ Kh7 33.Qe4 is possible, perhaps we are better placed than we would be after 30...Qd5 31.Qxd5 Nxd5 32.Bd4 but it's still the same structure and material. 30...Rc6 is interesting. 31.Bd2 Qd4 32.Bxc3 Rxc3 33.Qxb7 hxg3 34.Qb8+ (if 34.hxg3 Rxg3) Kh7 35.hxg3 Rc2 and we take on a2 next. |

there is also Qa5
30...Qa5 31. Bd2 Re6 or 30...Qa5 31. Qxb7 Nd5 32. Ra1 (?) Re6 hxg6 might be good to play before all this. |
