Default Experience with teaching abroad??

Has anyone ever taught in a foreign country? I have a friend who is interested in teaching in anoher country. Her certification is in ELA (English/Language Arts). She is interested in doing it for a few months and if she likes it possibly a year or two.

Thanks in advance!

Do a search on Google. There are plenty of horror stories out there.

I remember reading that one of the bigger scams in some of these schools is that they will pay you a pittance while you are teaching, with a large bonus promised to you (in your contract) if you teach to the end of your contract. However, inevitably they'll fire you (for some trumped up reason) a week or so before the end of your contract so that they can avoid having to pay you the bonus.

My friends sister taught english in Japan for 2 years, she loved it. She said the money was enough to get by on and worth the experience.

If she speaks English as her native tongue, there is truly massive demand for ESL teachers all over the world.

Europe is out unless she has an EU passport or doesn't mind working under the table (I'm thinking of working illegally in Spain, as they apparently don't care), but Asia and Latin America would love to have her.

Tell her to check out the boards and job listings at Dave's ESL Cafe
