I have now had two users pm me requesting the reinstatement of their custom titles. Both are regular users. There is no reason that I can not reinstate the title with appropriate notes, correct?

Custom titles are lame and unnecessary. Mods are generally unfunny therefore so are the titles. I hope the reds make them go away like they did with the colored names. When I see a custom title, I think "wow, stupid" about 5x more often than I think "wow, funny". Avatars are enough to give a poster character, we don't need lame ass titles.

If anything you backed up Mike's point. While you might think they are stupid and, 80% of the posters outside of a given forum think something is stupid, it is the home forum where a poster resides where the title gains relevance. Its as simple as this, if mods dont want to give them out then dont, if they do then do (just note it). It shouldnt be anything that the admins legislate though. If you start legislating this little things that help build friendships and community then you are actively swinging a sledgehammer into this boards foundation. People come here for a lot more then poker, they come to talk to friends they have met along the way. Mike said it best, dont start destroying that.

When it starts to cause problems for the site, the admins have to get involved. And there really are only a few ways we can try to help improve this particular situation. But I believe this discussion has helped a lot, so for now I don't see any big changes coming in the near future.

as for my thoughts on the whole thing:

whatever, i'm totally ok with anyone with no notice posted as to why their custom titles were given having them "revoked." i haven't read this clearly enough to know if only the people who have had them changed forward of a certain date are having them changed back, but if that's the case, then that's fine too. people who get them changed back will probably pm a mod (likely the one who changed it originally) and have it re-changed if the mod remembers who the f they are. so whatever.
