Default \'6000 year old\' earth figure

I guess this is just the lazy man's google, now, but maybe the answers i get will be different...

When 'young earth creationists' or whatever cite 6000 years, where does that come from? Is there a complete genealogical line in the bible that allows us to trace Adam to Jesus or something?
