Default Audio: what is the \"line in\" setting for

i just bought a pair of HD555's and noticed a lot of static when theres no sound playing. i fooled around with the settings and found that all the static was due to the "line in" in volume settings being set to anything more than 0.

am i missing something by always having line in set to 0?

unless you're doing analog recording or playing from an external source plugged into your line-in jack, you should have it set to 0....you won't miss anything.

The Line in setting is for amplification of whatever is plugged in to the line in jack on your sound card. If nothing is plugged in and you amplify it enough, you'll get random static.

BiPolar is right, the only thing the Line In is for, is if you have sometype of other device that you want to use the soundcard.

such as a TV tuner card, etc.

just mute it if you don't need it
