Default What do you guys use for making websites?

I'd like to first state that I am completely clueless
and this is my first attempt making a real website.

I am going to be making a couple different websites, one memorial and one personal probably blog-type thing. I was wondering what you guys did to start your website. I bought dreamweaver 8 and a tutorial book from adobe and will just use the stuff I learn from the book to create. I also want to know what hosting companies are best for making a blog.

Also, how does one create a website without an editor like dreamweaver...just a straight up html editor??

Any other beginning advice is great.

Even Notepad.

Although, most professional HTML coders use an editor that has color coding, checks for missed opening/closing tags, etc...much like what you see when looking at the actual code in DW.

I'm not a web designer, but I have created and/or maintained a few sites over the years. I prefer DW at my amateur level. Professionals don't need a WYSIWYG editor so DW is just more bloat over what they need/use.

I have no input on hosting companies.

you can use just about anyone for hosting a blog. I'd recommend dreamhost if you can find one of their $7.99/yr plans they they advertise sometimes... check webhostingtalk.com or slickdeals.net

I normally use ultraedit for HTML, but I don't do much creation, mostly just editing.

I use dreamweaver if I want to actually create something.

I just use TextPad, and keep a version of IE & Firefox loaded up for testing.

It's basically like notepad, but does color-coding of the syntax (built in support for php/css/html/etc)

If you learn html, all you need is a text editor and a browser. I use VIM, and usually use Firefox for the browser. Firefox is generally more standards compliant and less forgiving of coding errors than IE. If it works in Firefox, it will usually work in IE, but the revers is not always true. You want to test your web pages in IE, of course, because it's still what most of your users will be viewing the page with.

Notepad, Syn, PsPad, preferably KATE

depends on where I am (and what Systems I have access to).
