Default I suck at travel shopping

I have never really had to fully search and book a trip on my own online, yet I have played around a little with the expedias, orbitz, etc. I now want to make kind of a spontaneous trip to Las Vegas for the first weekend of December, leaving the 1st and coming back the morning of the 3rd.

After twenty minutes of research I find that I have no idea what I'm doing. I've never been to Vegas and I've never flown on such short notice so I'm not sure on what the extra cost will be for me. Any suggestions on sites other than the big names for quick deals?

First fare I see on Orbitz from O'Hare to McCarran and back is $292 including taxes, nonstop on United, Dec 1 to Dec 3. Only bad part is the return flight is very early in the morning. There's a second choice for the same price with a later return, but that leaves late in the day, sticks you in PHX for almost 3 hours, arrives at 4am Monday morning in Chicago.

You must be better at this than I am, bav. The best offer I see is $349 before taxes. Link?
