Re: What athletes have actually lived up to hype?
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] I was too young at the time. But based on his record in the juniors, I'd imagine that Gretzky had a ton of hype coming into the NHL. [/ QUOTE ] "At age 6 he was skating with 10-year-olds. At age 10 he scored 378 goals and 139 assists in just 85 games, and the first story on him was published in the Toronto Telegram." The first season he played in the NHL he was MVP. He was 19. He also won the next 7 [/ QUOTE ] I was at the Hockey Hall of Fame a while back. They have a full room just for Gretzky. They showed the stats from his 10 y.o. junior season where he scored 500+ points in 85 games. He was also the subject of a 30 minute national TV special when he was young (maybe 12?). Parents on other teams kept yelling that he was a "puck hog" but he also led the league in assists as well. I'd say he's the most hyped pre-ESPN athlete ever, and he lived up to it. |

Re: What athletes have actually lived up to hype?
[ QUOTE ]
I'm sure there were some expectations but he wasn't even the top pick he came out. [/ QUOTE ] Neither was Tony Dorsett, Marcus Allen, Ricky Williams, or Reggie Bush. Doesn't mean there wasn't a ton of hype surrounding these guys. [ QUOTE ] Contrast that to the guys who we are discussing in this thread who were not only the top guy the year they came out, but probably the top rated guys off all time coming into the pros. [/ QUOTE ] I don't think anybody was saying Sanders belongs with the ceiling-less anticipation that marked Woods, James, Gretzky, etc. but there was a tremendous amount of hype about him right from the start. After all, he did produce what is probably the greatest individual college season of all time. |

Re: What athletes have actually lived up to hype?
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] Barry Sanders? LT2? [/ QUOTE ] wtf Barry wasn't even the feature back his entire time at Ok State... he was second string behind Thurman Thomas for a while, IIRC. [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, but he was only a true freshman/redshirt freshman and Thuman Thomas was Thurman [censored] Thomas. No shame getting stuck behind a future NFL hall of famer. In his only year as a starter, Sanders had like 3200 total yards and 44 touchdowns en route to the heismann. |

Gretzky, Tiger, Kareem, and Lebron....I think that those 4 are totally above anyone else mentioned in this thread so far when it comes to this question. [/ QUOTE ] not to be a curmudgeon, but how old are you? for all the pub lebron got in hs, you'd be amazed at the hype larry and magic got leading up to and after the ncaa finals. all pre internet, pre espn, too. |
