Suppose you have 5-4 o . You wish to know the number of flops that contain the following :

a)6-7 with no 8 or 3
b)3-2 with no a or 6
c)3-6 with no 7 or 3

a) first case - 4*4*34 = 544 There are 4 ways to select a 6 and 4 ways to select a 7 . Once they have been selected , there are 48 unseen cards and you cannot select an 8,3,6,7 which means you must multiply 16 by (48-6-8=34).

second case- The flop contains only 6s and 7s .

4c2*4 +4*4c2 = 48 . The total number of flops is 544+48=592

b and c) is 592 as well .

Therefore the number of open -ended straight draws with 0 gaps is 592*3 over 50C3 = 9.06%

Ive computed the probability of getting an open ended straight draw (exluding the double belly busters ) with 0 gap connectors .

Do you understand my answer ?

Suppose you have 5-4 offsuit and you want to know the probability you hit a gutshot straight draw .

The flops that you like are:
a)87x where x is not a 6 .
b)86x where x is not a 7
c)73x where x is not a 6
d)62x where x is not a 3
e)a3x where x is not a 2
f)a2x where x is not a 3

events a,b,e,f are mutually exclusive so we have to be careful with c,d .

592*6 - 64-64-64-64 = 3296

The probability of this happening is 3296/50C3 =16.81 %

The 8-out straight draw calculation is for open-ended straight draws + double-gutshots. This is 9.6%, and you can eventually get to that calculation if you follow the links starting from the 9.6% link for 8-out str8 draws. The first post on that link gives the numbers for 1-gappers (in blue), and has a link to another post with a gutshot calculation for suited connectors.
