Can someone tell me what Sony's marketing strategy is behind this? What is the benefit of undersupplying your product and essentially creating a black market where anyone can profit?

[/ QUOTE ]

Also, if Sony isn't behind some of the eBay selling they are completely retarded.

maybe someone else already posted this but i belive Sony only released 100,000 consoles in Japan which is also insane.
so i belive its something like 400,000 USA + 100,000 Japan.
The ceo guy said he wanted it to be 2 mil by the end of the yr. and like 4.6 by next yr.
As far as why sony did this, its simple there was numerous delays with the ps3 and they were scared the wii and 360 would sell and people wouldn't buy the ps3.
I would wait to see the amount being shipped to the USA for the 2nd round as it could still be very profitable.
The risk of buying a wii and not being able to sell it online is minimal especially if you would keep it anyway.

FYI - I am not going to buy the wii as is b/c they havent figured out their multiplayer [censored] yet, and the virtual console has not been tested out (according to the reviews i read it wasnt "fully operational").
I forgot what the problem with the ps3 is/could be (outside of the usual first-gen problems, but ill see if i can find out)

Edited for sources:
About the wii
"The biggest frustration is the Wii doesn't let you play games against your friends online out of the box. Nintendo is still working on the development software to offer what it feels is the optimal experience, but says the functionality is on the way. (It has not given any sort of timeline for this, however.)"

This is sick. I'm seeing PS3's go for almost $2000 on eBay.

I really wish I would have been able to acquire one of these. Just didn't work out.

go to CompUsa, buy a sony HDTV for 1799, get a PS3 for doing so for regular 499, sell for 2000, you get new 40' HDTV LCD from $299. simple.

Where did you see this deal? I'm interested, I want the TV.

CompUSA was *not* getting second shipment in today, so you haven't missed out. Yet, you have until the 18th, and it's a 4-8 week wait, depending on when Sony reships.

Still, better than missing out totally.

Thanks for the reply. I checked that out, and still don't see it. Maybe I'm a tard or something? I checked TVs and Gaming, but I'm just not finding it.

1) Click on link
2) Look for/ <edit><search> Playstation, click on link
3) Read text
'You may still make reservations for the Playstation 3 with the purchase of any Sony HDTV 40" or larger until 11/18/06. These will be fulfilled from our second allocation which may take 4-8 weeks for us to receive from the manufacturer.'

Seriously, how did you miss it?

Also, and this is slightly more effort but cheaper, you can buy one on Yahoo Japan auctions for about $430-450 as of last night, shipping will be an extra $50-100 or whatever, but still, English defaults is the only change to make and it plays Region 1 DVDs, but is not backwards compatible for PS2 games.

If you don't care about that then...

Hm....will the prices on PS3 hold at 3k when 2nd shipment comes in? If it doesn't come in before Christmas then the price is definitely going to drop. Any word on how many units on the 2nd shipment?

they have had giant production problems, believe me this is nothing close to a 'marketing strategy'
