Re: Quarterback controversy Polls
[ QUOTE ]
Garrard has clearly been the better QB. [/ QUOTE ] Strongly, strongly disagree. Garrard has clearly been a bad QB. According to Football Outsiders' numbers, Garrard has been the second worst passer in the league this season among those with at least 60 passes, behind only Chris Simms (that's on a per play basis; he hasn't accumulated enough playing time to do as much overall damage as players like Andrew Walter). He gets some of that back due to his running ability (they say he's been the 2nd best running QB behind McNabb), but he's only had 13 rushes this year, so that doesn't help him that much. Conventional stats also say he's been terrible, completing only 50% of his passes and throwing more interceptions than TDs. Both conventional and advanced stats say that Leftwich has been very mediocre this year, but he was very good last year (FO has him as the 9th best passer in the league in '05 -- again, that's a rate statistic; he accumulated the 13th most total value). Besides, even if he continues his mediocrity this year, that's much better than playing Garrard , who would be one of the worst starting QBs in the league. This is a team that has a good shot to make it to the playoffs; if they throw that away by playing Garrard over Leftwich, there should be a bloody purge of the coaching and front office staffs. |

[ QUOTE ] Garrard has clearly been the better QB. [/ QUOTE ] Strongly, strongly disagree. Garrard has clearly been a bad QB. [/ QUOTE ] I'm seriously worried about Garrard playing on national TV, especially now that Leftwich might consider the surgery to clean out the "scar tissue." With Coughlin coming back to Jacksonville I can see that stadium wanting him to get absolutely pounded, of course Del Rio will never allow his team to fall that low to attempt to do this. I really hope that Garrard can get going this week as this is as big as a game can get for the Jags before it gets to being must-win. And Jack will not be giving up on Leftwich, I believe we will see Del Rio go back to Lefwich when he is healthy. It's tough as a fan to understand this, but the Jaguars are now one of the best teams at seeing the big picture in football. The NFL isn't a 'now' sport anymore, you have to look to 2008 this season to be succesful. |

One thing I love about the Andy Reid (and Joe Banner) Eagles is that they are ALWAYS looking at the big picture. Know how the Eagles always have cap space avaliable at the start of the season? Well at mid-season, that cap space is still avaliable, and they use it to sign their young players long-term. In the last few weeks, they locked up Reggie Brown, Mike Patterson and Trent Cole all though like 2013. We let our vets go in free agency, but the young studs never get a sniff at FA. They do this every year. |

The Patriots and recently the Chargers also use this strategy to good effect. The other strategy is to mortgage your future and effectively move future salary cap $ into the current year by backloading contracts with bonuses and minimum salaries in early years. |
