FWIW...Most tourneys I've been in don't allow shots from the 5 man.

Sure as long as you don't spin

International Table Soccer Federation Rules

Of particular interest would be Section 15 (Page 11)

I said the rule is dumb, I wasn't disputing its existence. I was disputing "anyone who allows spinning is a poor player."

That's akin to saying all streetballers suck at basketball, because they don't enforce charges in their games.

It turns it into a game of luck instead of skill, plus if everyone is spinning, the ball can fly off the table at a pretty high speed.

It will take you a while to beat the other, more nerdly, programmers who have devoted more hours to practice than you.

For the short term, work on begin able to get off one hard shot from the 3-man.

Also, get your friend to learn to do this:

In the rules posted at work, if the ball leaves the playing surface and goes above the "men" then it is a dead ball.

Hey there,

I'm pretty good at foosball - crush any normal player that comes, but would be destroyed by the "pros". I've played against some of the USA's best around the chicagoland area, and have picked up a few good tips.

My advice:
(1) Become an absolute beast at the 5-bar. Being able to successfully pass from here to your 3-man is key. Your typical opponent will have a good offense when he gets a hold of the ball, but will suck at passing.

Think about it this way - a good 5-bar = the ball stays on your side = more shots on goal.

Learn to brush pass, and learn to pass FAST.

(2) As far as shots go, I've mixed it up between the pull-shot and the snake. Try both, pick the one you're most comfortable with, and then work exclusively on that.

Practice on the same tables you'll be playing on - it makes a very big difference. (The good Tornado tables are MUCH faster than the cheapo tables).
