[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] Also, do not discount the fact that money is the best way to influence policy. If the drug cartels do not want drugs legalized, and the sizable majority of American people do not want drugs legalized, it is clear that drugs will not be legalized, and the cartels will continue to have high profits which they can partially re-invest into American politics on all levels. [/ QUOTE ] Regardless of the above, legalization will never happen. International treaties are at stake: Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs I'm not a politico, but I would assume there's lots of gov't red-tape regarding this. It's not just a matter of influencing policy and repealing some laws. [/ QUOTE ] As it happens, the international treaty has a clause that includes *not* having to comply if the resulting law is against the constitution of that particular nation - for instance, if the Supreme Court finally woke up and realized the CSA was unconstitutional, we would NOT have to abide by that treaty. A treaty that *we* pushed for in the first damn place.... AB |

Iron81 said: Cocaine and Heroin are extremely dangerous drugs that kill hundreds or thousands of people a year. People who get addicted to these drugs are huge burdens on society.
Canis582 says: Rush Limbaugh and Brett Farve are not huge burdens on society. Coke and Heroin are bad because they cost so much money and drive people into poverty. if an elbow of poppies cost as much as a lb of oranages, those substances would cause less harm than alcohol. Allow me to be first in this thread by saying HARM REDUCTION, PEOPLE!!! The DEA seeks to increase harm. |

All drugs should be legalized. There is absolutely no benefit to society from keeping them banned.
One benefit of legalization is that users would be able to purchase pharmaceutical grade drugs that would likely carry dosage instructions and contraindications just as regular pharmaceuticals. This would allow people to be more educated in their drug use and reduce the risk of overdosing or consuming a lethal combination of drugs. Also, the most important reason for legalization is that it is an individual's right to consume whatever substance he desires. |

You can sit down and drink a beer, have a glass of wine, or a jack and coke, without getting drunk, but when you snort, smoke, or shoot up, aren't you just doing it to get high?
While this argument does nothing to address the hypocrisy of our existing laws, and I not in favor of any drug prohibition, it is a logical argument the other side can use. |

[/ QUOTE ] As a college student I rarely drink socially. Id say that 9 times out of 10 I drink for the purpose of getting drunk as hell. Basically I am drinking just to get high. So whats your point? Besides, you can smoke just a little pot to get a bit of a buzz. Its not an all or nothing affair. Basically your idea here is pretty foolish. |

[/ QUOTE ] This is a meritless argument. People can snort a small amount of heroin, or just smoke a little weed purely for relaxation, without getting any "higher" than a drink. AB |

[/ QUOTE ] No, you're drinking alcohol to get high. Switch to O'douls. Tastes about the same, it just doesn't contain any of those wonderful GABA agonists that alcohol has. |
