[ QUOTE ]
I'm not all that familiar with the translations that people are doing to project Matsuzakas stats, but my initial estimate has always been that Zito would be more a more valuable pitcher. Why would you prefer Mats? [/ QUOTE ] Mats is 2 years younger and also Zito's K rate has declined nearly every year which is definitely something to be wary of. |

Re: Rumor that the Red Sox have the highest Matsuzaka bid
Two other reasons that signing Mats could be better than Zito or Schmidt. 1) The posting fee does not coung towards salary for the luxury tax. That is a big consideration for teams like the Red Sox and the Yankees. Also he does not count as a free agent in terms of draft picks given up. So signing him over Zito or Schmidt allows you to keep some draft picks.

After Ichiro and Hideki, I don't think there's a bigger name in Japanese baseball. I'd bet that pays for a good chunk of the 38-45 million. |

Re: Rumor that the Red Sox have the highest Matsuzaka bid
So, basically Boston is saying that paying $38M for lone negotiation rights is better than battling on the open market for him next season. I hope they plan on tricking him into some ridiculously cheap contract, otherwise they just spent $38M for one year of him.

Re: Rumor that the Red Sox have the highest Matsuzaka bid
This system seems flawed to me. If the Red Sox heard the Yankees were going to have the top bid, what keeps them from bidding $100 million and purposely not settling with him on a deal. He would have no choice but to return to Japan and it would keep the Yankees from having him for an entire year.
That being said, paying $45 million just to negotiate with a guy that will probably demand 5 yr/70 million is just absurd. |

Re: Rumor that the Red Sox have the highest Matsuzaka bid
I'm pretty sure if Selig determines the posting bid was not in good faith the team would face severe sanctions.

Re: Rumor that the Red Sox have the highest Matsuzaka bid
