The djembe is not the same as the conga, neither of which are a hand drum. They can be classified as hand drums since they are played with the hand rather than a stick, but they are not the same thing as the hand drum.

I played congas in the pit for marching band this year. After playing as hard as I could for an hour and a half long rehearsal, my right hand was swollen and completely black and blue.

The "zoning out" is a common thing with many instruments that are played in repetative manner, including many melodic instruments. Much of the traditional music from sub-Saharan Africa is based on this seemingly mystical property of music.

Our percussion instructor's hands often start bleeding when he plays congas for a couple hours.

I've played one, my friend who is an incredible musician brings one with him whenever he does a live gig. I suck at it, but I'm not a talented musician. In the hands of a very capable drummer it can sound very good, nice deep, rich sounds, however I've always gotten the feeling that said talented drummer would always rather have a drum set.

i think if i was better on a set i would enjoy it more...but, for never taking lessons and just kind of learning on my own, i can't really complain...
