The fact that you think McCain Edwards would be close says enough...there is no reason to continue the discussion

A McCain Edwards matchup would have McCain winning by +8-10%

Hillary at the very least could at least hold her own in the debates...Edwards would get crushed.

2/3 of the electoral collage is open forfeited anyway.

Based on?

Logic? History? Common sense?

Take your pick.

The Dem presidential candidate in 2008 will not seriously challenge to take the South in any meaningful way. Depending on candidates for Pres/VP, they might pick up one or two states in the South. Similarly, the GoP will not challenge in the Northeast. The election will be won and lost in the midwest and possibly Florida.

This is assuming there's not a total meltdown by the GOP before 2008 -- which is possible, but is also not something the Dems have control over and cannot be predicted.

Wow, big response. Why the assumption that the south, particularly the more northern "southern" states can't be won? Remember, Kerry was very "northern". And to iron81, Bayh is midwestern (Ohio, Iowa, Wisconsin) and Bredesen is Southern (Florida). What other ticket would better "target" these states and why? If you could get a ticket that could challenge for the battleground states, by appealing to some Pubs (as they apparently did in their Red States), and challenge for some Southern states as well, why wouldn't you do it?

Oddly, the guy who could've appealed to a lot of Southern Dems was actually Howard Dean. He was the moderate, pro-gun Governor of a rural state.

Then the Vermont Supreme Court handed down their decision on Gay Marriage and that combined with Dean being the only prominent anti-war Dem to make him look like a raging liberal.

That's potentially huge as close as the elections have been.
