Since SEM seems to be a hot topic in this forum I thought I would ask all our resident experts what their opinion is about pursueing a career in this field.
Currently I am a marketing major at Bentley College outside Boston. Ive always been interested in the internet and this semester I picked up an internship where I work directly on various PPC campaigns. I will almost certainly be a 'Certified Google Adwords Professional' in the coming months so I think this will at least give me an edge over others looking for entry level positions. But what I want to know is how much potential there is for growth in the industry? Obviously marketing on the internet is here to stay and paid search and SEO are only a part of the deal soooo how profitable is it? Are all these jobs going to India? It seems like just becoming a consultant and going it alone is really a very popular path for many SEM experts...am I wrong? Basically I am looking for any and all advice about the industry. Should I focus on something else with a marketing degree? Ive heard entry level for PPC managers is like 35 which is totally cool with me, but I have heard the ceiling in kinda low...like maybe 100k? Any good SEO books, or resources...kinda like 2+2 is for poker Educate me please! Thanks |

Concerning India - in general they don't speak/write english well enough to be creating and managing PPC campaigns. Get in on the forum project if you haven't already, this is exactly what we're doing. |

i would say if that type of thing interests you, you should try to learn web development skills as well. id say ideally programming skills but even if its just being butter with photoshop and dreamweaver, that combined with seo and ppc knowledge as well as a marketing degree would appeal to some people.
i actually just had a marketing interview on friday where they asked if i had any experience with seo or ppc. |
