Default Company gave us 1000 shares. If it doesn\'t reach $42 we can\'t sell.

I work for a company that gave us 1000 shares about 6 years ago. Our stock had just went through the roof. It split and was at $42. We got 1000 shares but (a big but) we can only sell it for every dollar over $42 its worth and you have to wait 7 years. It doesn't look like this is going to be a problem since it hasn't been over $42 since we got this. Its currently $36.98. Is there a point that I should sell if it does go over? If it went to $43 i could sell all my shares and get $1000 for example.

Think this should go in finance and investing.

Anyway, dunno what exactly they gave you but it wasn't 1000 shares of common stock.

Looks like they gave him options with a strike price of $42. They don't seem to expire and he can't exercise them until 7 years after and the price is above 42.

Yes probably. I don't know anything about stocks and I actually forgot all about this. I just asked someone and we actually already surpassed 7 years. When we first got this I think our stock was up around $90 and it had split. Ever since then its been in the low-mid 30s.

poker,

"Is there a point that I should sell if it does go over?"

You should sell when it hits $43.82.

If it splits, shouldn't you now be able to by 2,000 shares at $21? Or do options not work that way?

El D,

This is way off. The answer is $43.87 and I think if you recheck your math you'll agree with me.

pokertom,

These challenging calculations are very difficult to estimate. I'm impressed by how close your $43.60 guess was.
