Default Two Pair facing all in on river

Villan is 37/11 over just 45 hands.
I'd been playing pretty aggressively and so decided not to make a continuation bet this time as villan had quite a small stack and I didn't want to play a big-ish pot with top pair-poor kicker. I understand that betting the flop here is usually the standard but I wanted to vary the play this time.

Villan has $18.65 to start the hand, I cover.

I think the missed bet on the flop forces you to fold here. He very easily could be holding something like Ah8h, Kh8h or 88, all of which have you beat here. Without betting the flop, you missed the chance to push these hands out. You can beat a missed flush draw that doesn't hold an 8 or a weaker K. Would he push from OOP with these hands on the river?

This hand demonstrates why it's important to bet the flop.

He probably would have called anyway

because players at this level are generally bad.

I don't like the check on this flop here. There is a medium straight draw on the board, he could already have an OESD and the T gave him the straight. I agree with varying your play, you just need to do it on boards without a draw.

Anyway, he could also be playing a weaker hand, not giving you credit for two pair since you checked the flop. But if he was playing smart, he had to be scared of the 6, unless he hit the straight, because your betting could be looked at check, semibluff the straight draw and then he goes all in when one of the cards that could give your the straight hits.
