Default Drinking habits

In general, which of the following 2 types of drinkers would you consider more problematic:

(A) The drinker who has 3-4 drinks most nights of the week (we'll say 5.5 days average) to get a nice buzz, but never gets wasted

OR

(B) The guy who doesn't drink on most nights, but when he does drink (we'll say an average of only 5-6 times per month), he gets absolutely falling down, black out-wasted (10-15 drinks for the night).

Explain your answer if you feel like it.

well, i'd say neither of them really has a drinking problem.

that said, 'A' is a real lightweight vag if he can get a good buzz off of 3-4 drinks.

I think more important is the social situation each person is in. If the first person is drinking alone every night and the 2nd person is a college student that hardly drinks at all when he/she goes home then the first person has a bigger problem. If the 2nd person is drinking that much alone to drown his sorrows or whatever I would say he has a bigger problem.

Either way person 2 with a little less intensity is basically me when school is in.

Both probably have a drinking problem, to be honest. I voted for A because it sounds more likely he's an alcoholic (though it's possible both or neither are). 3-4 drinks every night sounds a lot like a person who needs to drink to feel NORMAL. Going out and getting wasted once or twice a week is not healthy (and I should know...though my wastedness is usually more like 7 or 8 drinks in 4 hrs, so for a guy my size that's more like drunk, but not falling down wasted), but it's less likely to be based on dependency and more likely to be based on poor social habits, hence the desire to get really drunk to have a good time.

See how I rationalize my own behavior? It's great.

They're both in danger of becoming alcoholics down the road, but B is in much more immediate danger of being hospitalized by binge drinking, getting arrested, wrecking his car, etc.

They both are problem drinkers, pretty clearly. A sounds like an alcoholic, and B could be on the way.
