Has anyone ever had a dish called something like giang-ja-rheem? Its like a boiled beef type dish that my ex's mom used to make for us when she visited? Never seen it in a restaurant and i miss it so much i've considered trying to get back w/ the psycho girl just for her mom's cooking [/ QUOTE ] if we're thinking of the same thing, i always pronounced it jhang-jo-rheem. tasty side dish |

f2f, I don't know if this is "authentic" at all, but Singaporean restaurants here are usually a sort of hybrid between Malay/Indian/Chinese food. http://www.straitsrestaurants.com/ is a pretty good high-end one (I think 3 Bay Area locations now). There are plenty of cheaper ones that are really good. [/ QUOTE ] Diablo, Straits is pretty good and their menu is interesting, but there's a great hole in the wall in Menlo Park called Shiot. I'll take you there sometime. It's fantastic. OP, Korean food is the nuts. I think I'm gonna make some bulgogi this weekend. Thanks for the inspiration! Sucker |

It's been my experience that the more white people in a restaurant, the suckier it is.
Visit a Korean restaurant that has a lot of Koreans in it, and you'll find an awesome place. |

It's super salty and delicious(and stays good for a long time). I used to live off this, rice, and kimchee in college. DN |

El,
Yeah, I noticed that alot of these dishs were popular/common in Singapore. How much better do you feel the food is in the high-end places as opposed to a good hole in the wall on the corner? |

The hotel I stayed at was right ontop of one of those vegetable/fish markets. Walking through was probably one of the nastiest experiences of my life. Youve got fish all over the place and meat dripping blood, and a whole bunch of these bowls filled with god knows what? It looked like they cut someones stomach open and scooped everything out. Not a pretty sight.
