Re: This Crap Sickens Me, More Idiots Awarded Millions In Damages
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] A sign wouldn't have stopped these kids who were already trespassing from climbing on top of a train and getting zapped. People shouldn't be given millions of dollars for being stupid. [/ QUOTE ] This isn't necessarily true. I've trespassed hundreds of times in my life but never anywhere that had high voltage warning signs. [/ QUOTE ] That doesn't mean anything. I'm sure these kids are not as intelligent as you, and therefore, a sign may have been futile. You can't assume because you would have been smart enough to not stick a live wire up your ass, that the average 17 year old tresspassing asshats would have been. |

[ QUOTE ]
wow, so once again in life being stupid is +EV somehow [/ QUOTE ] Ya, suffering third-degree burns over nearly your entire body ROCKS! In fact, why don't you go try it out? I love how people are quick to point out "inflated" insurance premiums as if they had a clue about what they were talking about. As someone who has worked in a plaintiff's firm before and seen tons of personal injury cases, for every 1 case like this, there are probably around 25 with legitimate damages and liability that insurance companies refuse to settle on or needlessly drag out the process (costing policy-holders money). Want to pay lower premiums? Have a policy that doesn't cover anything and won't pay out when you get in an accident! That way, I'm sure your premiums will be really reasonable! Another story that supports my idea of a killing booth. Just put a booth with a button in it and a sign that says "If you push this button you will be electrocuted." Have some automated system to get rid of the bodies.
I'm positive that booths like this in all major cities will get rid of at 20% of the population. |

Re: This Crap Sickens Me, More Idiots Awarded Millions In Damages
You can't possibly put signs-up or safetey measures for EVERY possible outcome.
What if some parent had a mentally handicapped child who got out of the house and was down there and couldn't read the sign. What if a blind guy wandered there and the sign wasn't in brail? Everyones always looking to blame someone else when they stand to receive a bunch of money for it. It sickens me, but what do you expect from juries? Jury duty pays you something ridiculous like $40 a day. Most intelligent people are going to do what they can to avoid being picked for a jury, because it's just not worth it to miss that much work for so little compensation. So the people who do actually wind up serving on the jury aren't going to be the brightest bulbs in the box. |

Before you get all outraged, did you bother to look into the facts of the suit? Or did you just read this extremely terse news article?
You are aware that any time there is a big verdict insurance companies actually place stories like this in news outlets? Usually when you dig into them they aren't 1/10 as crazy as they seem. |

It really doesn't matter, I guarantee both of these guys will be bankrupt by age 30. They are just temporarily holding onto this money until their stupid nature will lose it back to society. [/ QUOTE ] Yup. Hopefully they'll take up poker. |

[/ QUOTE ] I didn't find any warnings that getting bad beats playing poker would cause me to bludgeon my neighbor to death with my keyboard. Time to sue the casinos, online poker companies, book publishers, magazine publishers, chip and card makers, and Microsoft for making such a sturdy keyboard! It's not my fault, I need my hand to be held and to receive direction from others on how I should act on a constant basis to avoid any potential problems. It's no wonder our government is trying to fricken control us. |

Re: This Crap Sickens Me, More Idiots Awarded Millions In Damages
WTF you guys are ridiculous formulaic anti-lawyer knee-jerkers. Trespassing around rail yards is extremely common and seems perfectly reasonable; if you've ever walked a rail right of way you were tresspassing. Climbing on top of a box car is also common and seems reasonable; I've done it several times myself. There should've been a high voltage warning. They f'ed up and didnt have one, so they pay. This is not a frivolous suit. I'm sure most of you do worse things that cost me a lot more money, such as driving dangerously or underpaying your taxes.
