I started playing live poker in 1994 in AC. Mostly $1/5 stud at the Trop & Taj, moved up to 5/10 & 10/20 years later. I was 21 when I first started playing, and looked about 16. Anyway, I found that if you are RESPECTFUL to older players, GENERALLY they are respectful to you.
I also noticed that the higher the limit you play, the lower the nit factor. Avoid the lowest limit in the room, if you can. Remember A LOT of older/retired players use the casino poker room as a social club/meeting place. They don't have to make a ton of money each session out. They just want a little relaxation & entertainment.... |

[ QUOTE ]
But poker tables can be some of the most joyless experiences you'll ever find in a casino, particularly if you're at a table full of sullen underage teens with the shades and iPods, just because they're so friggin' serious. Then, the only joy at all is taking their money (which admittedly ranks pretty darn high on the joy scale). Moving over to the binky stakes limit tables, the geriatric spread limit stud tables, or even the angry nitfest O8 tables is a heck of a lot more fun because you're much more likely to find people who wouldn't mind a little jocularity to go with their gambling. [/ QUOTE ] Totally agree with both statements....Probably why I only play stud and limit hold 'em. I avoid $1/2 NL like the plague. |

An over 50 amen to O8 with oldies being a gold mine.
I don't mind the younsters with the ipods as long as they behave themselves. It's big fun though, with a jerk, to keep turning to them, with a serious look on your face, and speak softly to them. It makes them take off the headphones each time. Big fun until they catch on. I can't use an ipod personally because I always start singing along ("innagoddadavida baby") and get thrown out. |

However I do openly mock anyone who wears sunglasses at anything under 5/10 NL or 20/40 LM [/ QUOTE ] I wear sunglasses during tournaments, shamelessly. No matter the buy-in. I wear them because they make me feel protected while I'm getting stared down. It's like I'm in another world. I don't think I could ever bluff in a tournament without sunglasses on, without pissing my pants. I wouldn't wear them in a limit ring game even above 20/40 (although that's as high as I've ever played), because even if I'm bluffing, it's just one BB (as opposed to maybe my whole stack), so it's not really a problem to keep my composure, plus you don't really get stared down in limit games anyways. I don't know about in NL ring games... never worn sunglasses in them but I've only played as high as 2/5, and not really that often. |

I recently played in a 10/20 game with a girl who was wearing an Ipod and doing puzzles in a Sudoku book while playing fairly TAG to SLAG. All I could think of (but didn't say outloud) was "a little ADHD are we?" [/ QUOTE ] I've seen a girl who fits this exact description at the Taj, all the way down to the playing style. She was borderline-cute and was showing decent cleavage. She kept talking to me, but then would put her headphones back on as soon as she was done talking, so I could never say anything back unless I was quick about it. Which in general I'm not. |

This is as close as anyone's ever going to get to starting their own branch of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing inside a casino. [/ QUOTE ] I've felt the same way a few years ago playing $1/5 or 5/10 stud in AC on Fri./Sat. nights between 10PM-4AM. All the old timers were back on the bus, or home sleeping, and all the drunk wackos sitting down are just starting to "warm up". |

I usually find that there are going to be one or two people at the table who will be fun to chat with. However, at the old Casino I used to play at in Shoreline, WA (Goldie's), the morning crowd tended to be 90% the same people, and for a while this woman was coming who I COULD NOT STAND. She talked SOOO much, I had to start bringing my ipod just for my sanity, and to avoid losing it and going off on her. She was eventually perma-banned on the sole reason she was annoying, and her annoying behavior simply pissed off too many people.

I bring my ipod and only break it out if one of the following two things happen:
1) Bad breath nit to my side won't stop talking to me 2) Cards go ice cold - ipod helps keep me from making plays out of frustration |
