Default Overpair on paired board: How to proceed?

From the final table of the 10+1 Deep Stacks this past Sunday.

This was after 11 hours of play and the table had been as rock solid a table as I have ever played at. Not a move out of place, and only occasional bluffing. BB, like everyone else, is a solid-conservative player.

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t30000 (8 handed) internettexasholdem.com

UTG (t494474)
Hero (t896937)
MP1 (t994083)
MP2 (t982712)
CO (t963183)
Button (t717830)
SB (t773530)
BB (t742251)

Preflop: Hero is UTG+1 with J[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], J[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img].
1 fold, Hero raises to t120000, 5 folds, BB calls t90000.

Flop: (t220500) 5[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 8[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 8[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets t175000, BB calls t175000.

Turn: (t570500) 6[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (2 players)
BB checks, Hero???

At this point, I figure the range of hands he could have is somewhere between 77 and TT. As solid as this table was playing, I found it hard to believe he was calling my pre-flop raise OOP with 5-5, 6-6, A-8 or Q-Q, K-K, or A-A which would be an auto re-raise since nothing indicated I was coming at him with a super-weak hand.

All things considered, what should be my play right here?

I don't find it hard to believe that he called your 4BB PF raise OOP with 5-5, 6-6, or A-8. Since you've hammered the point about how solid and conservative the villian is, I find it more likely that he cold called with Q-Q, K-K, or A-A to trap.

Be very worried about the call on the flop. You fired quite a strong (good) cbet in which he called 30% of his stack. That throws up all sorts of flags. Even more worrisome that he checked the turn. Being a solid-conservative player 8x (with the exception of A8, which is still a stretch) isn't within his range, and I doubt he'd check-call with a PP lower then jacks unless they were 5's.

Check the turn. If a scare card (A) falls on the river and he checks I would seriously consider taking a stab since now it looks like you did a good cbet within your range with A-K, A-Q. If (A) falls and he pushes, fold. If (A) doesn't fall and he pushes, fold.

Well, eventually all the money got in and he actually had 8-8. So I had the range of his hands correct. But partially due to fatigue (I was already ill and had been playing for 11 hours...I was fading incredibly fast)...I hastily moved all my chips in after a bet and a raise. I think a part of me was desperate to separate myself from the field as well, but this was the first time I'd gotten this deep in a tournament of this format. So I'll chalk it up to inexperience and use it in the future.

Thanks for the feedback

Those tricky trappers.

So you bet the turn and called his check-raise? That's why patience is so important in tournaments, especially deep stacked tournaments. How much did you bet?

I bet out 300,000...forcing him to commit his chips if he didn't have the boat or better...and naturally he did so I had stuck myself in the hand....you live and learn.

Up until that point, though, I played well so it bodes well for the future.

Check turn.

You either have villain crushed or he has you crushed. I also bet less on flop.

Well, it'd be silly for a good opponent to trap this late in a tourney. He's fatigued and it's been a long day for him too.

Played fine as is, till turn. There are a couple more options you can take on a paired board. Just not one that doesn't have you going broke anyway.
