Re: Thoughts from a disappointed online player...
Although I do not play profesionally, I do play allot, about 3 years I was only playing LIVE poker (20/40 fixed) and was spending an average of 25-30 hours, I then switched to online pretty much exclusively and that is what I play now - I would rather quit poker than have to go back to playing live all the time - once you get used to seeing hundreds of hands an hour (4-5 tabling) it is very difficult to 'get into' live games (I do play once a month live just to change it up, but at the highest game they spread in my area (20/40) I still can not make even a 1/3 of the money that I can 5 tabling 10/20 online for the same length of timeplaying a week - plus I get bored to tears as I play pretty tight so I maybe playing 6 hands an hour......gets a little monotous).......being a 'live' poker pro would (for me) be a hard gig - it is just way too slow, boring, and you are generally hanging out with degenerates all day....find a way to make it work for you online is my only advice I guess (I am CND so nothing has changed for me - except party now sucks) - AF

Re: Thoughts from a disappointed online player...
I think the viability of online poker is still very much in doubt. The question is not whether you will be able to cash out and deposit. You will. The question is whether enough fish will stick around to make the game profitable. I'm already having a hard time beating anything but micro-limits online. That doesn't mean that nobody can beat the mid and high limit games. I would concur that OP probably shouldn't panic yet, but he probably should have a plan B, whether that's playing live poker or looking for a job or business oprtunity.

Re: Thoughts from a disappointed online player...
i play only live, and have played live for over 10 years, about 1.5 years full time(sole income) and the rest semi-pro. I've never played on-line except for a few hours at a friends house. i enjoy live play, but then again i'm not used to seeing 200 hands an hour. if your really profecient at limit holdem you should be able to make around a bb an hour. at 20-40 thats say roughly 30-50 an hour. you need to decide whats good enough for you, and whether you can handle the pace of live play compared to on-line. i don't yet have enough experience in no-limit to comment on your expectation there.

Re: Thoughts from a disappointed online player...
I don't consider the small number of hands (usually 35 or 45 with a shuffler and two decks) per hour that you can play to be the major hurdle to overcome - for most clubs these days the toughest thing to overcome is the high rake coupled with a bad-beat jackpot drop and the dealer toke.
I played in a brand new room this weekend in Laughlin. The game was average to better with 5-6 seeing the flop even for a small raise. It was 2-6 spread limit with a $3 rake most hands, $2 to the jackpot, and $2 to the dealer - that's $7 per pot (or $200+ per hour dropped). Now that's tough to overcome. That was the room's highest limit, but my wife is learning so it was fun - and still profitable for me. My local casino here in AZ is close to the same cost, but a $6-12 game can be beat and so can the $8-16 for a couple BB/hour if you are a decent player (for me, about $28/hour) However, limit SUCKS. I play mostly $5-$150 spread limit here, which is a silly limit imposed by the Arizona Department of Gaming (A-Dog for short - and for a realistic name) and it plays much like a $2/5NL game that should be beaten for a minimum of $25/hour. The $2/$5 NL games in Vegas are much looser - hence easier, and should be beaten for $35 to $50 when the games are good. Dogmeat [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] |

Re: Thoughts from a disappointed online player...
This was my initial reaction to this post, Hollywade. If you want to play B&M there are plenty of valid reasons to do so, but why would you just up and quit because a major site decided not to take Americans anymore?
There's plenty of game up in MI if you want to try it. I can't tell you if you're gonna make money at it (nobody can) but you might try it yourself. Follow your gut, but my gut tells me (and there are lots of lawyers who agree with me) that this new law has more holes in it than a piece of Swiss cheese. I understand Windsor and Detroit have gambling, but who the hell would want to live there (except in the summer, of course)Upstate MI has lots of low level Indian gaming and it has the feel of the local VFW on Friday night. You might want to give it a try. |

Re: Thoughts from a disappointed online player...
I play live for a living and although I play at Foxwoods and not in the Midwest believe you should condider playing limit in the 10-20-40-80 range. you have good and bad weeks but the good weeks outweigh the bad by far if you are good enough
