Re: How do college kids get $500,000 to post bail??
Yeah, the court keeps the money as a form of collateral, hopefully ensuring that you will show back up for court. They give it back when you shwo up. If you run, that's when the bail bondsmen stick bounty hunters on your ass, especially if your ass is worth $500K to them.

So who actually pays the bondsman their interest? The court? |

degen,
without researching, my guess is that thailand has an extradite agreement. if the crime is serious enough for a 500k bail, its prolly worth extraditing. |

After that, they have to just hope you show up so they get the bail back. Watch Dog the Bounty Hunter sometime. He's mostly not a bounty hunter in the true sense of the word, he's really a bail bondsman that tracks down people skipping on his bonds on his own (although I think he does do some straight up bounty hunting work). Lots of bondsmen pay others to do their bounty hunting for them. |

Oh, so basically that means that this guy got someone to pay $50K that they will never see again just so he doesn't have to sit in jail while waiting for his trial.

Actually, Wikipedia says that there a courts that will take 10% cash deposits fully refundable if you show back up at court, so I guess it may not necessarily be the case that you are out that 10%.
