Re: Say goodbye to the dream
Re: money:
El D is, of course, right in all his posts. However, there are two things that haven't been mentioned yet: i-bankers actually work 14+++ hours/day their first couple of years (I've heard up to 18/7/365 as the top of the range, and if anyone sticks to 14/5 they will probably go busto) and the median turnover rate is something ridiculous like 18 months. Some of those people just jump to other firms, but most are washed out for good. In addition, the reason that guy who makes 3 million a year still makes 'only' 3 million a year is probably because he isn't a rainmaker, which is different from just being social and friendly. You really need a very specific mindset to succeed in this field. Finally, after those two 18/7 years there is a very good chance a large chunk of your salary will be going to support your new meth habit (I'm relatively sure that's *at least* a very large minority of NYC i-bankers). Having said that, yeah, the upside is tremendous and the work is probably way more interesting if you're into that. It's not for me, but if you think it is for you and still think that way after 18 months, congrats, you've hit the motherlode. Even if you don't, poker will, of course, still be here in one way or another. Congratulations, and I hope you succeed. FWIW, I think you've got a better shot than most people. Just stay away from the meth, that [censored] sucks. |

Re: Say goodbye to the dream
a,
"i-bankers actually work 14+++ hours/day their first couple of years" Jason is not going to be an i-banker. What in this thread gave you that idea? "meth habit (I'm relatively sure that's *at least* a very large minority of NYC i-bankers)." My experience is that it is very rare for i-bankers to do meth. Now, coke on the other hand... |

f2f,
"So the people who stake these guys are super rich gamblers?" In poker they are called gamblers. In finance they are called investors. |

Does anyone have similar info for other types of jobs, like engineering? [/ QUOTE ] Engineering jobs cannot compare to the money that Jason could make playing poker or working on Wall Street. |

Re: Say goodbye to the dream
people need to stop confusing ibanking with what jason is doing (trading). trading does not involve working the hours ibankers do
and cero, the numbers he's throwing out for starting salaries are fairly similar to what i'm experiencing right now. if anything, they're a little too high. i dont think first year bonuses are quite that much. a little less than 100k sounds right |

Re: Say goodbye to the dream
congrats Strassa. are you interested in sales? I think the institutional sales guys have the sweetest gigs of all, but like most things it takes the right type of person/personality to succeed.
my buddy is supposed to set me up with the sales girl that covers him, and I'm counting for her to be my sugar mama |
