Re: Would you stay at the El cortez
I was privelaged enough to work for 4 weeks at the El Cortez when I was breaking in as a dice dealer... It may have been the single greatest experience of my life. All I can say is thank GOD I was on day shift (10am-6pm), so that it was light out when I went into work and light out when I left...

I hate what vegas is becoming..... If the mob was in still in charge none of you would be posting like this. Vinnie and Guido would be showing up at your respective places of orgin.

Re: Would you stay at the El cortez
The Fitzgerald is clean, fairly newly refurbished, and supercheap.
There are cops everywhere in downtown but frankly they are there because they NEED to be there. If somebody is in that neighborhood and does stay at the ElCo try walking home past the Greyhound station next to the Plaza. Come to think about it, you could walk by that several times a day just to LOOK at the dregs of society. Far and away the best free show in Vegas. Way better than that lame lightshow on Freemont, yet only a block away, and always live 24/7! Anyone who's ever taken Greyhound knows it's a little different. The Vegas station is that to a ^3. |

Re: Would you stay at the El cortez
Casino Royale also has $3 min. craps with 100x odds, if your want to donk around a little in (slightly) -EV table games. I was in Vegas recently on business, and found the low-roller strip joints (Casino Royale, O'Sheas, Slotsa Fun) to be much better for table games than the big places. Most of the big strip casinos had $10 or $15 minimums on craps and blackjack, except 6:5 single deck (you might as well just hand the dealer a hundred dollar bill and walk away. It will save you a lot of time and agravatino.). I didn't make it downtown, regretably.

Re: Would you stay at the El cortez
Just to echo what others have said... Downtown is fine if you stay at one of the established places under the canopy on Fremont or at the Plaza. Wander beyond where the canopy ends and you are on your own. It's fun to drive through there (doors locked) during the day time just to gawk at the hookers and cheesy motels (Pair-o-Dice motel, as featured in "The Cooler"), but walking in the area is not recommended. I don't want anybody to get the impression that what people generally refer to as "downtown" is dangerous, though. There are two downtowns. The Fremont Street Experience area is the tourist area and is just as safe as the Strip. It's a great place to go for that old Vegas feel. The other downtown, away from the canopy, is the place you don't want to go.

Next you will tell me Barbary Coast has been sold and the $2.99 breakfast special (that used to be $1.99) is going away. Re: Would you stay at the El cortez
That's my point. Spend $10 or $15 a nite to be in a safer area under Freemont. The plaza is fine.
Also, you should really go inside the ElCo just to do it.. it's a trip, but not too bad. Of course, my favorite (non-poker) casino is now the Golden Gate, and I've heard it called a dump by many, so what do I know. Wife and I are actually debating staying there next time. Has anyone stayed there? |

You can certainly find $5 no problem. And the food is still cheap. The Main Street Station buffet is damn good for $15. My wife and I have stayed there the last few times. And poker wise? Binions, Plaza and Golden Nugget all have poker rooms. There are a lot of good tourneys to choose from. Unless you are hi-roller poker player, wanting big limit games, why stay on the strip? |

I spend 40-45 days a year in Vegas and I always stay on Fremont Street. The Four Queens gives me a rate of $30 a night, $42 on Friday & Saturday. I rent a car every trip so playing poker at the Bellagio and the Venetian is not a problem. And if my girlfriend is taking 3 hours to blow her hair and do her makeup I can just walk across the street to Binion's and kill some time playing 4-8. I'd highly recommend that you guys give downtown a try. You might be surprised at how much you enjoy it. |
