MTV True Life - I Have Touretts

I had an astrophys professor with touretts. He would twitch a bit and then cluck like a chicken somewhere between 5 and 10 times during a 50 minute lecture. In trying to describe his clucking by imitation to others, I found that it is actually very difficult to make a convincing clucking sound.

I was always curious if this was a direct effect of touretts or if the clucking replaced swearing by medication or mental training of some sort.

I have a mild case of tourettes, as did my mother. Dire, the symptoms vary from person to person. I have no idea if the person in the show (which I did not see) had her symptoms change by medication. I do not say anything as a result of tourettes. Or, as I have told more than one supervisor who had surely noticed my ticks, "I have tourettes, but no words are out of my control-- I am in fact responsible for whatever I say."

I note that I have seen people at a poker table try and "read" my ticks-- is he nervous, etc. I pity them-- I have no foggy idea what they mean, and when, so good luck to them in trying!

What do you think? Is this BS and just some guy acting like an idiot? Or does he really have problems, although they may be unrelated to Tourettes?

I grew up with Tourette's, but I was fortunate to (for the most part) grow out if it as I got older. In terms of my tics, they went from very obvious when I was young to now, where the majority of people I meet have no idea (currently 20).

Personally, I'm pretty put off by the Tourette's guy, simply because it's a horrendous representation of people with actual Tourette's. It gets annoying when you have to answer questions like "If you have Tourette's why aren't you yelling swear words and pissing yourself?"
