Interesting responses.
Note that I did not in any way suggest that companies should not be able to make as much money as they wish. There is no obvious sense in which salary capping decreases the sporting performance of the big stars. Their motiviation does not suffer as far as I can tell. They do perhaps become more motivated by things such as winning rather than getting a better contract, though. Any baseball fan would surely see this as hugely beneficial! If the captains of industry were salary capped, it is not clear to me why the economy would suffer, or be held back. Please excuse my ignorance, but I don't see the inevitable link between CEO salaries and company performance any more than the link between pitcher salaries and team performance. |
