Re: NFL MVP rankings after 5 weeks
[ QUOTE ]
Bailey currently ranks behind 75+ other defensive backs in the league so far in "Passes Defensed". [/ QUOTE ] Isn't the reason for that because teams don't want to throw in Champ's direction? |

Re: NFL MVP rankings after 5 weeks
[ QUOTE ]
Bailey currently ranks behind 75+ other defensive backs in the league so far in "Passes Defensed". Granted, that is not the end-all measurement of statistics for defensive backs, but it is telling in that it records the times a Defensive back took an active role in defending the pass, ie....he swatted it away. Bailey is behind 75+ other gentlemen in that department. To say he has actively prevented more passes from getting to his recievers that anyone else just simply isn't true. [/ QUOTE ] This is an absolutely terrible stat to bring up, since the entire point of the OP is to point out that most teams have completely given up throwing the ball to his guy. jvs |

Re: NFL MVP rankings after 5 weeks
1. McNabb.
2. Manning. 3. Grossman. QB's matter a lot, and these are clearly the 3 best QB's in the league. |

Re: NFL MVP rankings after 5 weeks
Grossman (vs GB, Det, Min, Sea, Buf)
1243 yards, 10 TDs, 3 Ints Manning (vs NYG, Hou, Jac, NYJ, Ten) 1278 yards, 8 TDs, 2 Ints It's very close but I think I give the edge to Grossman for his extra TDs. The schedules are not drastically different enough in difficulty to change anything IMO. |

Re: NFL MVP rankings after 5 weeks
It's interesting to bring up Champ Bailey. Some of those claims, such as how he shuts down his reciever and therefore is "invisible" are true. Some of those claims are completely wrong, or just typos. As others have said, CBs are far from the most important or highest paid players, LTs and QBs are. Maybe he meant "defense" not "NFL."
But I simply can't see the argument that replacing Champ Bailey with an average player would hurt the Broncos more than replacing McNabb or Peyton would hurt the Eagles and Colts. Furthermore, McNabb is having one of the greatest seasons ever by a quarterback, which is a far more important position than cornerback. To suggest that McNabb is not the NFL's MVP through five weeks is just silly. |

RedBean, Champ shouldn't the MVP however pass defensed is a really bad stat for the same reason errors are a bad stat in baseball. They are subjective based on each individual stat keeper, and different players have different oppurtunities. [/ QUOTE ] I agree, they are subjective, but they are far less subjective that some guy on the interweb saying "bailey has prevented more passes than anyone". |

Out of the top 25 paid players in the NFL, only two of them are CB's. [/ QUOTE ] Using the USA today link the following CBs are top 25 in salary: 6 Champ Bailey 7 Fred Smoot 8 Samari Rolle 9 Anthony Henry 12 Charles Woodson 13 Gary Baxter 19 Ken Lucas Not sure where you got 2 from. |

Re: NFL MVP rankings after 5 weeks
That list is really poor, because it penalizes players who recently signed long-term deals. It is ONLY based on salary, not cap charge. Deals are usually back-loaded in terms of salary, meaning the salary in the beginning of the deal will be small while the cap charge is still large.
For example, Peyton Manning and Donovan McNabb, two of the league's highest paid players, are not on that list. |
