i'd have to think about best book i ever read, but the best book i've read recently is Jonathan Lethem's Fortress of Solitude. Its an amazing story of friendship, culture, and discovering yourself. The main character is amazingly well developed as are the others. you can really identify with his struggles etc. amazing book.

godel, escher, bach by douglas hofstadter

this book is very thoughtful and clever and made me think differently about a lot of things but is also playful and delightful to read. i went and read the little blurb at amazon, and i tried to write a little review about the book here, but the review of the book on amazon and my review don't do it justice. if you are at all a sciency kind of logical figure things out how does this work kind of person you will fall in love with this book.

The Great Gatsby. I can't imagine changing a word of it.

One flew over the cuckoos Nest

Good story, and the fact that its seen through the eyes of a tripping Indian puts it over the top

Because I've read it (and all the sequels) at least 5 times, and it gets better each time.

Rice is/was a master at describing intimate details. After reading this (and other Rice works) I felt like I had been to New Orleans and San Fransisco.
