Personally, I think black comedians are really missing out on the broad range of jokes that are waiting to be unearthed relating to their inability to successfully hail a taxicab in New York City.

[/ QUOTE ] I think there isn't much argument for the fact that there aren't many understated black comedians. particularly since Def Comedy Jam, etc. is most people's expsoure to black comedians, they generally go for the laugh out loud, knee-slapping humor. There are many successful white comedians whose jokes are on a more subdued intellectual level in that they elicit a smirk or interal laugh, but not the real belly laughs. Obviously this is not to say there aren't plenty of white comedians that go for the big laughs and also black comedians that are very intelligent, but there aren't many current big name black comedians that touch on politics, etc. in way that is more than superficial. Also, i think it goes without saying that the crudeness of the jokes is no indicator of the intelligence of the comedian or the audience.
