Fun little home game: Call a bluff w/ten high on the river?
(X-posted in STTF)
================== So I think we were 6 handed in our "big" tourney yesterday. $30 buy-in, t5,000 starting chips, 45 minute blinds. I had like 5 people bail last minute, so we only had 12 show. Payout: 160,100,60,30,10 Yes, I said 10. Often, in our longer tourney's we'll pay half-buyin to what previously would've been the bubble boy. This took the $5s out of the 165, 105 previously given to 1st/2nd. So there is t60,000 in play. I have about t12,000 Chip leader has about t25,000 He got all of his chips in about 2 or 3 big hands. He's a solid player who knows the ins/outs of the game. A pretty serious intellectual/nerd/geek. He mixes up his play pretty well and has several different speeds. His default style of play is generally maniacal...though with the slower structure and him already having 1/3 of the chips in play, he's been playing relatively tight. However, he is the type of player, though, that will sit out for a dozen or two hands, but then suddenly go deep w/complete trash - no pair no draw. So to say he has been playing tight, is more of a concept of tournament strategy and less of a concept of starting hand selection. Anyways... Blinds at 150 300 A25, he raises my BB in the CO or Hijack to 900. Read: He's raising pretty weak here. I have T8s and decide to mix up my play and call. (planning on stealing postflop) Flop: 994 rainbow I check (w/the intention of C/R'ing) He checks behind (pretty much sensing I was going to try to blow him off the hand if he bets) Turn: A I rep the ace (which I know he doesn't have) and lead out t1,000 He mulls it over and finally calls. Read: He doesn't have much. He might be floating a card to steal the river. Though, I really think he has a low-mid PP and is snapping off my bluff. He's realizing/thinking that if I actually hit the ace, I wouldn't have bet it, as that has little-no value in this situation. He doesn't think I have much here, either. River: A I check (assuming he'd checkbehind) He mulls it over and fires out t2,500 Read: He has a PP, and he bet out 2,500 'cuz he knows he's been counterfeited I had a pretty strong read here in general, and these are the only things that worry me the most: a) He floated broadway on the turn and has a better high card than me. b) My read is 100% wrong (which is always possible, even though I was nearly certain of it here in this case) I folded 'cuz I couldn't find the courage to call w/ten high. I think the river is the most interesting street here and was hoping for thoughts/reactions to that. Though, entire hand is open for debate, obv. BTW, I know preflop is a little thin, and I had been playing fairly tight all day. This was one of my few 'mix up' hands in 9 hours of play. Snarf Edit: FWIW, Villian is a 2p2 lurker. He has like a dozen posts or something. |
